Sadly, the people believe that the US is the source of their problems and have believed so for decades. I lived there in the late 60s and early 70s. Even back then they believed the US was raping their natural resources and stealing their oil. We went in, developed the infrastructure and paid for every drop that was exported. Like most Latin countries, only a few benefitted from the arrangement and the masses were fed the lie about the money.
