            I used to be of the opinion that G.W. Bush was a great President. Since becoming better educated on his actual politics, well, he was still better than zero, fdr jfk lbj, and their ilk.

          • My grandmother idolized FDR, but then she wasn't exactly politically savvy, my grandfather tended to keep quiet about it because he liked his peace and quiet, but I did catch him rolling his eyes when she spoke about it.

          • Thanks guys! I respect the military. My whole family has military involvement, my Dad was a lifer. But I think you will agree that humans being what they are, sometimes what is taught goes out the window. I agree that American troops are held to a higher standard, and part of me agrees, while the niggling part of me says "but why should THEEEEYY get away with it!" Overall, I think "enemies" of the USA get better treatment that some other countries "friends." I just was darkdumb to realize that problems in the military did not sprout like mushrooms when Bush took office. I am sick of people trying to manipulate facts to make GW Bush sound like a poison released up on the earth by Satan himself. Was he the perfect president? Not in my opinion. Did he do as well or better that some of his current detractors would or could have? Yes, again in my opinion. He faced a very rare circumstance in office. He was duly elected (quit whining, he WAS duly elected) and was RE ELECTED. So he was definitely a choice, not a mistake in vote counting. We put up with Clinton (who only won because Ross Perot split the Republican vote-Clinton never received a majority) and we are now putting up with Obaby because half the nation voted against a man who wasn't running! Live with it! Its in the past, can't be changed, and you need to move on.

          • I'm going to have to agree with Robert on this one. This attitude is taught from day one, and as you rise in rank, it becomes an even more important part of your training. NCO Academy training gets into this more seriously because as an NCO you have lower rank enlisted looking to you for direction, in fact, there are times more senior NCO's have younger officers looking to them for direction, depending on the situation.

          • Rose, I give you a thumbs up for overall sense, however; granting that there is a certain amount of truth in what you posted I found it to not be that way. Looking back upon my training and military education, (as an enlisted person, not an officer, for whose training etc. I cannot attest) I shall say it was not so. UCMJ is VERY explicit about what is legal and not legal in warfare, and ongoing training, at least for those in a combat mos, fortified the basic instructions. As for indoctrination you and I may be using 2 differing definitions but I was encouraged to ask questions and seek a right answer instead of just going along to get along. THAT being said, There have been instances of abuse in every civilized military, (I'm only addressing post-Geneva convention warfare.) Simply stated, in my humble, yet considered opinion, the U.S. Military warrior is held to a higher standard of conduct than those of other nations, simply because we have the ideal of LIBERTY as the (ideal) reason for going to war.

A great many situations of killing civilians, rape, burning doen homes, etc happened in WWII they just weren't publicized. And I guess you are too young to remember the Mi Lai massacre in Vietnam. The bottom line is that soldiers are trained, indoctrinated and desensitized to the humanity of "the enemy" or they could not function. Sometimes its hard to drop that. Go do some research, grow up a little, then come back and speak with the grownups.
