  • PS- Kimmy, if you're still on this thread, I noticed way up top, you took away the wrong impression from something I said. I didn't mean that Nazis weren't taking kids away to government schools, just that it was voluntary on the part of the parents - it was an honor to have a kid taken to one of the Adolf Hitler Schools, because they were the ones being groomed for the next generation leadership cadre.

    Everyone says that they schedule we all grew up with was based in agriculture,m and kids needing to be home for harvest. I am not familiar with a great deal of harves requiring massive labor until FALL, but that's just me. They also claim that the kids "forget" over the summmer and (gasp) they have to reveiw at the beginning of the year. So if all that is true, why am I waaaaaay smarter than most of my kids teachers, learned more in scholl than ANY kid seems to be picking up today, and was prepared to succeed when I went to collge, while most kids now eith er 1) require remediation before tackling college level courses or 2) get out of the remediation, then fail the course they take in the 1st 2 semesters?

    Probably because you're overestimating your own abilities, underestimating the abilities and responsibilities of professional teachers, and making inaccurate generalizations about "most kids now."

    As I've said numerous times, the right wing media tends to pump up the self-esteem of its fans, to the point that they fancy themselves smarter than the rest of the world. That viewpoint isn't necessarily accurate.

    The lack or presence of an academic degree does not invalidate my analogy. Knowledge is knowledge no matter how it is gained. My plumber has no academic degree but if I needed a pipe fixed I would call him because he has the required knowledge.

    As far as all that academic knowledge goes, my wife happens to be a teacher and she will tell you one of the first things new teachers find out is that most of that "knowledge" from 4 years of study is worthless. The maps the teachers are given do not fit the territory. The reason is that the people teaching teachers are often people who have not actually taught in schools themselves.

    Well, gosh, that wasn't the case back when I earned my teaching degree. All of my education professors had a teaching background. Then too, our education wasn't just about "knowledge"---it also covered skills. As I recall, I learned a great deal from student teaching experience----things that I couldn't have learned just by being a parent.

    Do you mean to say that your wife learned NOTHING about education or teaching during those four years? And, since you're arguing against my point that professionals usually know more than the lay public about their field, you're also arguing that she learned NOTHING through her years of teaching experience?

    Either you're exaggerating, or she's not much of a teacher. I can't imagine not learning anything at all, either in school or while practicing a profession, to the point that a parent with no professional education at all could easily step into one's shoes and do a better job.

    She has a relative who is a paid consultant to the public school system in another state. He gets paid to go around and tell teachers how to teach math. But his academic degree is in English and he has never actually tried to teach children himself. How did he become a consultant? Beats me. And he does not work for one of those "backward" red states, he works in an "enlightened" blue state.

    Since all we have to go on is your word for it, and since (presumably) you haven't seen his job description or witnessed him in action at work, it's impossible to say how he got his job, or how well he performs it. Sounds a little weird to me, because in my area of the country a person would need an advanced degree, plus adequate teaching experience in the desired field, before even being considered for such a job.

    And speaking about assuming things, do me a favor and don't assume you know anything about me. I do not watch Fox or any other news and I barely watch TV at all. My favorite TV pundit is nobody. I do NOT assume that "common sense" always trumps everything else but I also DO understand that an academic degree or other credentials guarantees NOTHING either. Results matter; everything else is just bullshit.

    I can only make observations, and my observation is that your opinion here, plus the logic behind it, is indistinguishable from what I've seen presented by most right wing pundits. As is the carefully fostered disdain toward professional educators.
    As any scientist can tell you, no, results are NOT the only thing to consider. You also have to make sure that the project or test is set up properly, to ensure that the results accurately reflect what you're trying to achieve. Which is why, as I said before, you can't just say "Homeschooling is superior to public school education because they do better on standardized tests." You have to know for sure that the standardized test accurately measures quality education, that the teacher is actually providing an education rather than just teaching to the test, and that s/he has the tools and resources necessary to provide said education.

    Even better now is that the schools have lunch nazis that take away your kids homemade lunch and force them to but the school lunches!
    The story yesterday was about a kid that had a turkey and cheese sandwich, a banana, potato chips, and apple juice. The lunchbox inspector said it wasn't nutritious enough. So they gave the kid 3 chicken nuggets. Obviously a much more well balanced meal! (SARC)

    Don't tell me you don't listen to Rush, Poopajoe, because he took this incident and ran with it (conveniently forgetting to present both sides of the story).

    If you read a full account, you'll see that

    1) the laws regarding school lunches are STATE laws. You righties do agree that these things are okay to leave up to the states, right? And that anyone who has a problem with them need only choose a different state to live in, that doesn't have such policies on the books?

    2) spokesmen for the school AND the state agreed that it sounds like the lunchbox inspector acted improperly. They're checking out the incident in more detail (which Rush should have done before trumpeting it all over the media to his gullible dittoheads, but we all know that Rush is less concerned with truth than with giving his fans what they want).

    It intrigues me that you do nothing but bitch about welfare recipients spending government funds on junk food; yet pitch a hissy fit as soon as you hear that the state is making sure that schoolkids are getting decent nutrition while on school premises. Proof once again that you want unfettered freedom for selected Americans, but the heavy hand of Big Brother for others.
