What Does Racism Have to Do With Gridlock? Well, ya see, it’s white snow, and that’s racist snow. Now if it had been black snow, then it would have been perfectly OK.

  • I loved hearing all the excuses from the mayor of Atlanta...how dare anybody expect him to actually do his job...sarc. He obviously attended the Ray Nagin school of emergency preparedness. Atlanta had plenty of snow removal equipment...but it was not utlilized...

    “The City spent $4 million on emergency response last January, far more than the $931,000 the City spent to purchase the new equipment.
    The list of new vehicles includes 15 Five yard Spreaders; 20 Ten foot Snow Plows; 10 Seven yard Spreaders; 10 Eight foot Snow Plows; 10 Eleven yard Spreaders; 14 Ten foot plows for garbage trucks; 35 Total Sand Spreaders; and 44 Total Snow Plows, according to the City’s news release.”

    • Once the gridlock set in the snow plows and spreaders were useless. I'm definitely not excusing the Atlanta or counties' governments. They should have cancelled school and advised people to stay home.

      • We had school districts in the San Antonio area waiting until 5 am to make a decision about closing schools. And we get snow even less often than Atlanta. But in Texas, school money is pooled, and redistributed to the school districts. One of the criteria is attendance. If the munchkins aren't in their sears at 8AM, they are absent, regardless of coming in late, for any reason. To my mind, this encourages absence. If you don't make it to school for whatever reason by 9, you're absent no matter what, so why attend?

      • The problem is they got hit with "freezing rain" first that turned to snow. Who knows when the last time they had to deal (if ever) with a storm this big (sq. miles, not just patches).

        And for the lucky who've never dealt with it, it's not sleet it's nastier. Look at it this way, freezing rain you can stand on your second floor balcony hold out your hand and it's raining. But it freezes on contact with anything that's outside at ground temps. Cars, trees, power lines, ROADS!

        Just from here it looks like the early wave of drive time left home and it wasn't too bad and got hit halfway wherever. The second wave that left after it had already started are the ones I don't feel sorry for.

        Besides being Jaw-guh where they're not prepared for it logistically anyway, add a little snow on top of the ice and I don't care how many plows, salt/sand trucks and emergency plans are in place; you're screwed. Even up here where we're used to it the rule of thumb is stay home! Perfect (or not) storm.

  • Maybe they should look into all those racist city administrators and SEIU union members who siphon off all the money gathered for these transportation projects through their bloated salaries.

  • Just think of the joy found in that RACIST white snow! A good 6 months of RACIST white snow and much of the south would be a different world. Crime would be down, the 'global warming' loons would out of business and that pocket of puss and infection called Atlanta would be livable again.

    Black snow is possible though - if you add enough soot into the air. Yes, major fires from natural or man made catastrophic events could give Atlanta their desire - BLACK SNOW!

  • I lived in the Greater Atlanta area for several years, and the suburban bias against MARTA is based on crime, plan and simple.
    Where MARTA has stops, the criminals use it constantly and the smarter of the surrounding suburbs simple said "No thanks" to any MARTA expansion.

    I guess that wanting to not be a crime victim is racist.......

    • Shouldn't Congress, and for that matter, EVERYONE know the results of an investigation into a non-elected arm of the government? Especially the IRS, known for intimidation of taxpayers, and even worse on some who are not paying. After all, with literall hundreds of bodies around, no one could stop the Mob back in the day. But they got many of the bosses on tax evasion.

  • Maybe it's because GA doesn't have much in the way of snow removal equipment & salt trucks. It would be a less then good investment when you get a big storm like this ever few years or so.

    • Ironically Danny, we had a severe snow/ice storm a couple of years ago, and guess what ... same damn thing happened. That being said, the City of Atlanta was experiencing a 'desperate financial crisis' and the powers that be decided ( oh-so wisely ) hey let's unload some of this snow equipment, after all how often does it snow here?

      That coupled with our BONEHEAD governor and the equally BONHEAD Mayor of Atlanta, who were warned well in advance of the impending *gasp* two inches of snow, elected NOT to close schools and businesses, until such time as the snow actually started falling! But, wait there is more .... one half of the employees of Atlanta that were supposed to be tending to the roads, LEFT WORK TO GO HOME! Just tell me where in the hell I can get an overly-paid job like that, and go the hell home when the snow starts falling?

      • Sorry, can't help you there Blonde. I was a nurse. We were expeted to work even in a nuclear holocauset. If we were not actually vaporized, we were expected at work. And the pay sucked.

      • RRB, just as an aside, can you tell me where The Weather Channel is based? Maybe someone could have had it on & taken note.

        • You didn't need the weather channel. Every local yokel meterologist in the continental US was drawing on maps, showing the jet stream making projections of the ETA in their locale, and warning anyone who would listen that the S was about to hit the fan. And I don't mean snow. This is the same behaviour we saw in Katrina. Warned for years that the levees would not withstand a big hurricane. Said hurricane tracked for WEEKS but no one in New Orleans was evacuated, moved, etc. It isn't lack of knowing. Its lack of knowing what to do and lack of caring for those who cannot care for themselves.

  • Gridlock is Hopeless Chains, foisted on the minorities by Obama, in an attempt to keep them beholden to the goobermint, so they will vote for Democrats in the mid-terms, and stand by him when he suspends the elections in 2016, keeping himself in office for another 20 years.

    Seriously, how can you take anything in the Slate seriously? It's entire staff is former NYT, Time, WAPO, New Yorker, Rolling Stone, etc, etc, etc, libtard activists.

  • Ah, no. I imagine Atlantans do not support a broader rail system because they do not want to pay for something they won't use and they are financial losers once built. Look no further than TriRail in South Florida. It only covers 16% of its operating costs with fares.

    • Kick you are partially right. However the biggest concern for us in the 'burbs' is the ability for the criminal element from 'the hood' to have access to us, and expanding MARTA to us would do just that. The county I live in is almost a 50/50 population. The difference being that the black portion of our community is 80-90% well educated and from the North. All agree, we are taxed to death here and absolutely not willing to pay more in taxes to allow the thugs into our community!
