Map from 1418 shows Chinese in America 74 years before Columbus. And now they hold the mortgage on the place, confirming the ancient principle of “finders, keepers.”

  • Zheng He was amazing.. a eunuch who practically setup the Chinese for global domination decades and centuries before the various European powers got into the great game..

    Yet i am extremely skeptical of all these claims. His voyages to Indian, Arab and African coasts are so well documented, that this vague stuff for the Americas isn't striking me true yet.. Plus the rivers look a bit borked

  • They should tell the Chinese that possession is more important then discovery in this case. But not to worry, with these clowns in our government running things, they will get it all back soon enough.

  • This stuff is old and tired. I don't think anyone doubts that the Chinese or the Vikings were here before Columbus. But what does it mean? Nothing. They looked around, shrugged, left and didn't come back. That makes them short-sighted idiots. If they didn't see the potential, then screw 'em.

    "Discovery" means more than "first to find something." It also means "first to realize the potential of." Many people knew that Elvis Presley existed before Tom Parker came along and "discovered" him. For good or bad, what Colonel Tom Parker did for Elvis, Columbus did for America. Whoever wandered this way before Columbus really doesn't matter.

    • Actually the Vikings didn't shrug and leave. The just settled further north. COLUMBUS had comparatively perfect environment, evenwith disease and insects, etc.

  • You know, I might be willing to believe the map could be true if it didn't include the rivers. Since they bare a rough resemblance to the actual course of the rivers it would mean they would have to have been actually explored. And exploring them in less than 70 years (or more and not once encountering a European explorer) just doesn't make sense.

    Also, it's been mentioned before, but the Vikings were the first confirmed Euro-Asians who found America. And Columbus was an idiot since mathematicians had already proved the Earth was round and a lot bigger than Columbus believed it to be. The real reason no one funded him was there was no way his ships could make it from Europe to East Asia since the trip would be too damn long. Most of the people he asked bothered to research this and refused to give him money when they realized he was an idiot. He was just lucky that Isabella was an airhead.

    • She wasn't that much of an airhead. She was well educated for her time, didbelieve the earth was roundish,,not flat, andthat finding a shortcut to Asia would vastly increase her county's wealth and status. And as has been noted else where, a western route to the Indies meant no Muslim interference, and possibly a shorter route.

    • No-one then believed the Earth was flat except the same kind of people who now believe that people then believed the Earth was flat.

      And while it is true that others made it to the America's before, the difference is that Columbus' trip changed he world. The Vikings, Irish, Chinese, and the Knights Templar may have been here too, but they never made a difference.

      • Yep. But just keep in mind that Columbus was an idiot, not a role model. He might have changed the world, but he was basically all charisma, no brains.

        • Well if all of that is true, there was a bit of justice as the continents are not called Colombus or Colombia (etc) but America (after Amerigo Vespucci), so at least he didn't get that.

          I think that the point being made is that by not sharing their discoveries with other cultures (for whatever reasons) the people that may have truly be given the credit were not given the credit and that in the end was their own fault.

          Perhaps many things would have changed in my opinion and hope for the better, because the Spanish (and Portuguese) treated the aboriginal/native people like crap and Bartolomeo de las Casas (a Spaniard) essentially, can be credited for the initial diaspora of Africans and creation of African slavery in the Americas when he went to the Spanish king at the time asking him to substitute natives for Africans. He later retracted seeing how Africans were treated and how wrong all slavery was but of course too little too late.

          If let's say the Chinese had kept it real and made a big deal of their discovery considering their ability to have tons of babies perhaps the use of African or even native slave labor may have been unnecessary.

          In the end though considering that things happened as they did even though hurtful and evil in many cases, I can only assume that this is how G-d wanted it for His purposes known to Himself and I have to accept it, but it is interesting to discuss what if...

  • Of course Columbus didn't "discover America".
    The Norse were sailing to Greenland long before, Parts of Russia are within easy boating distance of Alaska.
    When people hit this continent, you know they explored it. To what extent is the question.
    Columbus just had the best press agent.

    • So true. Ancestors of American Indians populated the whole Continent before Coloumbus. And thenthere were the maya, the aztec, . . . . Racially Indians are closer to Asians that Europeans!

    • How could Columbus have discovered America when there were already people here when he got here?

    • Look at the facial features if many American Indians. Decidedly Asian. Their ancestors crossed the now gone Bering isthmus and populated North America millenia ago. Pretty sure of it anyway.

      • I agree. I always say that. There has been times when I have seen old pics or drawings of Native Americans or certain asians like Mongolians and then I have confused one for the other (NA for Asians and Asians for NA). If I am not mistaken the Kon Tiki (or Con Tiki?) voyage essentially proved that it was possible for that sort of migration on the southern part the continent.

    • Plus China looked down on the rest of the world and didn't share their discoveries and inventions lightly. So it's not like they landed on the contingent and sailed back to Japan or Korea and said, hey, guess what we found!

  • The book called 1421, The Year China Discovered America by Gavin Menzies, was written in 2002. It made waves then (by waves I mean ridiculed), and promptly forgotten about. so people being so surprised by this map existing is pretty funny. I gave the theory credence only because I knew China was pretty advanced compared to Western civilization back then. China didn't have to dig themselves out of the Dark Ages (at least not until the Cultural Revolution-thanks Mao!). So the possibility that they could have sailed the oceans far enough to have discovered America before Columbus isn't too far fetched in my mind. Plus I was writing a thesis regarding China tying to get back some of its former power an glory and the "controversial" theory was interesting to me.

          • I got a TD too. The trolls are really rampant in the past couple of weeks. I am wondering what is going on? Maybe they are coming out in force on Conservative websites out of frustration on something. I mean certainly some of us probably butt hurt a lot of people, but there is something else going on right now.
