As a Veteran, I appreciate hearing these words of thanks. I never saw action, but since I volunteered when Reagan was President, there was every indication that we might have. All my friends thought I was nuts joining when Ronald "Ray-Gun" was in office. I was already 22 and there was little to no chance that I'd be called up even if a draft were reinstituted. It didn't matter to me.
What disgusts me now is these snot nosed punks that say they are Veterans joining OWS and similar movements, bringing disgrace on themselves and all Veterans by claiming to speak for us.
I used to look forward to going to the Airmens/NCO clubs on the weekends and at the end of the night, the DJ would play Lee Greenwood's "God Bless The USA". The entire crowd would be singing along and a raucus cheer would erupt at the end of the song. Those are the people that represent the Veterans I knew. Not the whiney, "gimme" brats that the MSM puts on TV.
Poppa, the veterans that you mentioned who participate in the Occupy protests are a small (as far as I know) percentage of the crowd. It seems that the organizers pimp them out to lend legitimacy to the "cause".
I am very proud of my service too but I remember some really bad guys in my unit. When I first got to the 101st in early 1986, one of the soldiers in my company was arrested, tried, and convicted of murdering another soldier over $20.00. Every organization has its sociopaths and losers of all kinds.
A friend of mine saw a Marine with no legs going in for a hair cut a couple of days ago. He walked in and paid for the haircut, said thank you, and walked out so nobody would see his tears. I'm proud to have friends like that. A few blocks away, Occupy San Diego was doing business as usual. To all who serve, and who have served, thank you.
Words cannot express how truly grateful I am to the men and women in uniform. Freedom sure as hell isn't free, but they gladly pay our share.
RIP_They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them.
My father, uncles, friends and all those soldiers who gave their time, limb or life for this great country, Thank you and God Bless all of you!
