Believe it or not, democracy and capitalism aren’t on the list. Maybe next year.
We know this doesn’t really have much to do with media, but it does take us back to a sweeter, gentler, happier time in America. (Are you ready for our tenuous media connection? Because here it comes) You know, those times the media tells us were angry, racist, misogynist, homophobic times. Oh, wait. They’re still telling us that.
So what the hell, here’s number twenty-three:
Cash Registers That Make a Ka-Ching Sound
Ka-ching — it’s a synonym for making money — the sound of the cash register ringing up a sale. Lots of people still say it, but some of them don’t know its origins because they have never heard the real thing. Cash registers that go “ka-ching” have been replaced by silent computers or self-checkout machines whose nasal artificial voices annoy more than help when they whine, “Don’t forget to take your change.”

I miss MasterCharge and Bank Americard. Sadly I'm too young to have ever owned one :(.
From the time I was in elementary school, I thought it would be cool to be a clerk and the checkout counter. I even practiced on a toy cash register with play money. Of course, I know how to make change, a dying art these days. But then, I couldn't wait until I was old enough to work a real one. Never got to do it. Now, since clerks tend to be insufferably rude or galacticly stupid, I prefer to do my own thing. So I am the self check out queen. I do miss the old machine, it had a very reassuring sound - the sound of the economy humming along.
