• Forget the KKK - what this shit will do to some cities ... well, it's not like the inner city has any monopoly on the inability to see past today.

  There are parts of Newark that have STILL not fully recovered from the 1967 riots. Yes there have been some good things in downtown (Prudential Center arena, NJ Performing Arts Center, Seton Hall Law school). There have been some nice housing developments in the central ward. But a lot of the south and west wards still look like war zones, and Vailsburg is a sh!thole.

  Charleston will probably survive okay, just as LA did after the 1965 Watts riots, and the post-Rodney King riots. But I'm not sure about Baltimore. Baltimore was Buffalo with nicer weather (slightly) for decades. It was like double Newark, Detroit without the glitz. Towns like Baltimore and Newark have never been truly "nice". They've been working class towns from the git-go. And they are old enough to go back to the days of working class being a synonym for "poor". It took a long time for some recovery there from the boom times of manufacturing.

  Now we'll see how many years, or decades it will take for the next recovery. We'll see if CVS jumps right back in and rebuilds the store that was torched. We'll see how many of the destroyed businesses don't come back. We know for sure that the mayor and council president did not help the long-term prospects of the business climate in Baltimore.

• The South has changed but Charleston won't put up with that for long. Tourism is their livelihood and Savannah has a lot of the same things Charleston has. Economic viability will win in this case.

  • My mother is from SC. I've been there (but not since 1968). Somehow, in certain areas I don't think it's changed much, including Charleston.

    My step mother was driving around with a black lady friend of the family in Charleston a few years back. They were pulled over by a Charleston cop who wanted to know if my step mother was OK and hadn't been kidnapped by the blacks.
