This whole teacher's union debacle is one of the reasons I'm not teaching, at any level, in Kalifornia. I grew up in a liberal educators environment and for the first part of my life I was pretty liberal too. Then I grew up, got out on my own and learned that money doesn't grow on trees -- now, I'm much older and far more conservative than any of my relatives still in the old environment. I have been banished, so to speak, from the family tree! I was also given the ole heave-ho before my teaching career even got started. I tried the Soldiers to Teachers program when I retired from the Army in 1997, but my twenty year career in the service of my country didn't go over too well with the Kalifornia Education Department in my home town. After about six months of trying to figure out if teaching was my gig for another twenty years, the Marxists in the Ed Department made my mind up for me, so I took my resume over to the Federal Prison Industry and after some contract work with them I left Kalifornia and came here -- to Kentucky. The State of Kentucky forces its teachers to get a Master's Degree in Education before they can start working for the state -- just another way for the teacher's union to get a bigger chunk of the teacher's paycheck 'cause it sure ain't for teechin churlin nuthin! Kentucky has one of the poorest ed systems in the country and one of the lowest literacy rates in the US -- but the teachers aren't hurting.
If they can't handle it in Kentucky they come to New Mexico. My state is at the bottom of the literacy scale for high school grauduates.
I think Texas is 48th of 50. The fact that our schools are trying to educate children who speak every language on the planet except English doesn't seem to matter.
Wasn't that covered on the civil service exam
The civil service exam was done away with. They couldn't find enough kollege gradeates able to pass it for the gooberment job they wanted.
I scored 89 percentile in 1980 trying for a mail carrier job. There were 1,000 or so applicants that go round, looking at 20 openings. I was then and still am white, male an not a military veteran. There were over one hundred minority females in the test group, a couple dozen of whom were veterans. Female gender got 10 points favor. Minority got 10 point favor. Veteran got the same 10 point favor. 70 percentile was a fail grade, but with the gives a minority female vet got 100. I was so far back they didn't even file me for the next go round a year later.
The next year the Wisconsin State Patrol had adverts all over the place for recruits. I drove past a substation everyday to and from home so I whipped in and asked for an application. The trooper at the desk gave me the once over and asked me if I was a vet. Upon hearing the negative response he advised that I stood no chance of being hired. Asked me if i still wanted the app. I said no but what was up and he told me there were too many white males already enforcing the highway laws in Wisconsin. He was one of them. The mandate had come down from on high. Female minorities were grossly under-represented in the law enforcement community.
Looking back, these were both cases of discrimination, in my civilian cracker ass male opinion.
Try being a veteran, white cracker ass male in New Mexico. Even though I am half hispanic, whatever the hell that means, and bi-lingual I didn't stand a chance when I got out of the service. I wanted a job at one of the government labs in the state, like Sandia or Los Alamos, and I was told I didn't have a chance in hell for the same reasons you mentioned.
Looking at it today I find it funny that so many are bashing Gingrich over his janitor job remarks for kids when the only people you see pushing a broom in a federal institution are minorities.
My parents encouraged me to take the mail carrier exam many years ago. But I suspected I would be treated in the same way you were, Dean, and so didn't.
I think the civil service exam was disposed of, in order for the government to proceed with their plan to implement those EEO and Afirmative Action scams.
Remember all that breathless "It's for the childrennnnnn." bullshit that was so prevalent when Bill Clinton was chasing women and Hilliary was running wild being the president. Now as the same party piles insurmountable debt on the childrennnnn they dont seem to give a rats ass about the childrennnnn. But they know it plays well with the stupids.
They can keep their frickin' village, the problem is now they want to ruin mine, and my unborn grand kid's, to "make it fair".
This is not news. This has been in the Democrats handbook of "spreading the wealth" going back to the 60s - if not even earlier than that. What I find amazing is that if they were really concerned about our children, why do they so openly support abortions? Additionally, if the Unions were all that great in educating the young masses - why do I have the feeling US children are so far behind - including most of the graduating class of 2012 from our "institutes of Higher Learning?"
Ever see a modern high skool gradjuate try to make change? If your bill is say $1.58 and you give 'em $2.08 to get 2 quarters instead of the smaller change, they look at you like you just made their iPhone disappear.
Whatever you do, don't give them a $2 bill. They'll probably have Herr Napolitano arrest you for counterfeiting.
Just joking around, I gave the kid behind the counter at DelTaco a Bill Clinton $3 bill. He spent quite a bit of time looking for a place in the register to put it.
That glazed eyes, vacuous look, yes. I like that. It is odd that somehow, the Sweetbay near my house actually has several young people, 19, 20 years old, all sorts, male and female, no race distinction needed, that are pretty astute. I've seen on more than one occasion they suggest the customer give them the 7 cents to get no coins back. Then the customer - prolly in her 30s - goes 'why'?
Gotta love the union's concern for educating rather then programing our children. None of them can read or write, but they all can sing the praises of "Dear Leader".
Have they reached the part in that manual that tells how the conservative christians are flying cropdusters over the neighborhoods spreading nuclear particles on the kids so the republicans can take over the world? Oh, that's in the next Obama SOTU?
