800-member clerical union costing LA ports $1 billion a day. The 800 clerical workers went on strike and thousands of longshoremen and truckers refuse to cross the picket line. It’s Union Economics 101: squeaky wheel gets the grease.

  • I think the unions saw the recent election as a green light for all sorts of strikes and stoppages. This is the reason they contributed big bucks to Obama's reelection and got out the vote for him. They know that the President and the federal government will not interfere in their disruptions.

    • Let them strike, the states with right to work laws will benefit greatly from increased business. Meanwhile the unions will lose what little sympathy they get when people start getting pissed at their antics.

  • Round up the union leaders and the strike participants. Summarily execute them using the thousands of guillotines recently acquired by our government. Those things need to endure a break in period to verify the functionality and the operators can use the training.

          • or in my case...caffeine! (Coffee in the mornin' coke zero thereafter) All the niceness goes away when drb is in the throws of caffeine withdrawal...just sayin'

          • I don't drink coffee, I do drink Crystal Light Peach Tea or Green Tea with Raspberry (or whatever generic versions are available), but caffeine doesn't drive my existence.
            That said, I have no problem with making sure caffeine addicts have their fix if it keeps me safe from assault!

          • I can not function without coffee in the morning, If I stopped I would be as incoherent as Creepy Crowley and probably just fall asleep at the keyboard.

          • I can relate drb, getting between me and the coffee pot first thing in the A.M. is a really really REALLY bad idea.

          • HA! let'em put us in the FEMA camps together... heads will roll using nothing more that our bare hands! drb and ooddballz save the world due to caffeine withdrawls! teehee

          • Better yet, just drop us in D.C. when the politicians are in session, no politicians, no need for FEMA camps.

          • Like I said, you have to be pretty careful with raw caffeine, it's deadly even in small dosages. I have my lady, who is an RN, looking over my shoulder.

            I think the funny part will be if I ever do get searched by law enforcement officers, and they find the tiny wooden container on my key chain, filled with white powder. "Officer, you probably aren't even going to believe this,....."

          • You might want to look at the caffiene content of the iced tea before you add anything to it.
            When I was in the AF and my school was at midnight, I took no-doz and other caffiene pills, they tore up my stomach.

          • I'm a mean, angry sumbitch for three days if I try to get off the caffeine. When the weather is cold, I drink cofee in the a.m. When it's hot out, I do the Dew. When I can't decide, I actually have a small bottle of pure pharmaceutical grade caffeine.

            I'll put it in iced tea, or whatever I'm drinking at the time. You have to be really careful with the dosage on that stuff, though. It's dangerous.

  • The worst part is they're being paid $80,000 a year for clerical work. And the benefits add an ADDITIONAL $85,000 per year. But at least their pension plan is fully vested after just 10 years. Unions are killing this country's world competitiveness. No wonder companies are outsourcing.

    • Why would the retailers call on BO to help them? If he stepped in, the union would wind up getting twice as much as it's asking for, and the strike wouldn't end until February.

      • The part about how shiploads are being diverted and that effecting the economy is what caught my attention the most.

  • actually this looks good all the way around, reduction in traffic, smog emitting vapors, no-doz hyped drivers... i say let them stay on strike. Oh, also, electronic filing notwithstanding, just imagine how many trees are saved per day that the clerks are on strike. OI if the cargo ships are still loaded that means even lower smog production, not to mention disturbing the poor little ole creatures of the deep being able to swim about and have some fun not worrying about trash being dumped, fuel/exhaust not stainin the pretty ocean surface, millions, perhaps billions, if not trillions of planktons being saved from gruesome deaths.

    the bad thing is, i don't know if i'm being sarcastic, or if i've been infected by greenie-osis.
    whilst writing That last sentence I wondered if algoreycom will complain about the sea-levels, what with all the displacement the full cargo ships will induce.

    • The ships won't be loaded, they can stack those containers as high as the cranes can reach. The containers will be unloaded and the ships will sail. The clerks will get tons of overtime when the strike ends.

      • well, I see the cargo ships are being diverted. I gathered from the story that the longshoremen were striking as well, which to me indicated the freighters would not have their freight unloaded.

        • One of the things the clerks are concerned about is "job security." In other words, if you're not needed any more, you still want to be paid.

    • In the grocery store last night, I noticed a full display of Hostess Holiday Fruit Cakes. I didn't even know they made those. I figure they're leftover from last year, since they'll never go bad. Even bacteria don't want to eat that stuff.

  • Ah Kalifornia, where on small group of nuts can send the economy into a freakin tailspin.

    Not a word from Governor Moonbeam either, he does not give a shit since he now has a super majority of liberal boneheads to run the state. They are not going to step in since they are owned by unions anyway...
