I wonder how much it cost Warren Buffett to get the pipeline killed? Now he is free to ship as much as oil as possible on his railroads all across the country, hoping that one of them doesn't derail and burn one of those little towns along the way to the ground.

Instead of building this pipeline, or rather, ALLOWING it to be built, he's content with shipping crude on dilapidated rail lines that periodically cause derailments and HELLACIOUS fires with more carbon-laden smoke than all the "clunkers" he forced off the road in 2009. And he strung along the labor unions for SEVEN freaking years on this. They should be storming the White House gates.
There MAY have been a "study" done by the State Dept., but it was never a serious consideration...it was just a political pawn, used by a bullshit artist that couldn't care less about what's good for this country.
For all the fuss surrounding this issue, I'm not so sure this thing is really necessary. Phases 1-3 of the project are already delivering 700K barrels a day to Texas refineries. Phase 4 or the XL pipeline will increase that capacity to 830K barrels a day. It certainly doesn't seem like a huge leap in delivery capacity for all the trouble.
Maybe the oil companies need to take a page from the obutthole playbook and exponentially increase the price of refined fuels in blue states. They vote for the people that are trying to hamstring them at every turn; I say reward them in spades. $1.25 a gallon for Texas and other red states and $8.50 a gallon for NY, Kali and the likes.
"For all the trouble?" The only reason there's been trouble is Obama. This nation is criss-crossed with millions of miles of pipelines. This one would be built by now, and you and I would never have heard a word about it if Obama wasn't trying to keep the environmental whackos happy.
The trouble it has caused by everyone that is getting dragged under in the wake of this project. The left has made it a political hot potato and managed to damage every rino that has been forced to take a side on the issue. Like you said, there are millions of miles of pipeline already. Keystone already has a pipeline and has been pumping oil down south. XL just increases their capacity by what? 15%? That's no bang for the buck of any politician who has sided with the XL project. The dems on the other hand are makin' hay.
You have to know how to deal with the one. 1) name it the Obama pipeline 2) say it is designed to carry sunshine (= solar energy!) from the Gulf of Mexico to Canada to reduce fossils fuel use, 3)'double the price of construction and kick back half to Obama and his dems. Would have been approved in 2009.
