    Excerpt: The Hill reports that Major General James Post, the vice-commander of Air Combat Command was relieved from his position for warning Airmen at a convention to refrain from speaking to Congress or the media if they didn’t support the official policy of the Air Force to dump the A-10 Thunderbolt (the Warthog) close ground support aircraft.

  • It's a weapons system with wings....not the other way around. I believe the original Gatling gun was available for use in the Civil War but was rejected for use as it was perceived to use/ waste too much ammo. Duh.

  • The Air Force has always wanted to get rid of the A10 -- it doesn't fit in with how they view themselves, even though it works. Whiskey6 is right -- a different branch would appreciate them far more.

      • No doubt. The people that *use* them understand what they're for -- A10's are only as deadly as the people that fly and support them -- and they are very deadly indeed.

        • I'm sure the guys that actually DID the flying and maintenance aren't the ones doing the complaining. THEY love the airplane.

          I got a chance to speak with an A-10 pilot once, in Boise. I asked him about a maneuver I saw them doing in the area of Barstow, CA. They would fly across the desert valleys, staying as low as possible, crosswise to the ridges and valleys. They'd show up inverted, coming over a ridge, then as they flew down the slope into the valley, roll 180 degrees to fly normally through the valley, only to roll back to inverted before going over the next ridge.

          "Quite simple, my friend. Both the pilot and the aircraft prefer positive G's. Doing it this way keeps the G forces positive and fairly constant throughout the maneuver, instead of going back and forth from positive to negative over and over."

          He seemed quite please with himself when I deemed him certifiably insane.

    Excerpt: A government watchdog group on Monday accused the Air Force of manipulating data to skew the record of the A-10 "Warthog" when it comes to civilian casualties and friendly fire deaths in Afghanistan. Recently declassified Air Force data said the A-10 attack jet has killed more U.S. troops in friendly fire incidents and more Afghan civilians than any other aircraft flown by the U.S. military, USA Today reported last week. But the Project On Government Oversight (POGO) said the statistics were skewed to bolster the Air Force's campaign to retire the A-10 in favor of the costlier F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.

  • I'd like for one of these Pentagon political weenies to tell me exactly what it is that they don't like about the A-10.

    • They have to cut their budget, so instead of getting rid of all the brass and bullshit at the top, they want to cut the stuff used to fight at the bottom. At the rate Obama's little generals are going, we will have a bunch of military commanders with no one to command and only slingshots and rocks as ammo. The A-10 just happens to be the target of the day.

  • I called in more then my share of air in Vet Nam. You never knew what was on station or nearby that would respond. We, as ground pounders, always hoped that it would be the old A1 Skyraiders that showed up. They could stay on station longer then the fast movers (jets) could. They were harder to shoot down. And, most importantly, they hit their targets with a much greater frequency then the jet guys. I think the Air Force hates ground support...doesn't fit in with their percieved mission. If they want to dump the A10's they shold just give them to the Marine Corps. They understand ground support.

(I guess someone has decided these "obsolete" aircraft aren't actually ready for the junkpile just yet. Wow... some good thinking at last? (I think the Marine Corps should buy the Warthogs from the USAF, cut rate, and take them over. The Marines believe totally in close air support, and the A-10 is great for that.
