Amid Trump surge, nearly 20,000 Mass. voters quit Democratic party. Is it a “Trump surge?” Or just people fleeing the Democrat party because they’re disgusted with Hillary and Bernie?

  • This is why all states should have open primaries, so people could vote for who they like instead of having to vote for the party candidates. I have changed parties a few times over the years, for state elections, so I could vote for the candidate I think will do the job. Independent voters, like me, who vote for the person instead of a party face this problem every election.

    • That doesn't even make sense. How do you "face a problem" when the primaries are mostly open and you can vote in any primary you want? That's like saying you have a problem because every time you dive in the water you get wet.

      And here's why you're wrong: there is no way to nominate a conservative for president in this country anymore, because all the Democrats are constantly bum-rushing the Republican primaries. In 2008, Obama was running unopposed so the Democrat primaries were meaningless, so of course they all came out and voted Democrat-light Romney in as the Republican nominee. It's almost the same situation this year: Hillary has it sewed up so Democrats can cross over and make sure the Republicans nominate a complete and utter asshole. As DRB posted above, analysis of the South Carolina primary shows that without Democrat crossover voters, Trump would have been third instead of first, and Cruz would have been the winner. This is a bullshit process, guaranteed to make sure no true conservative ever gets nominated.

    • I keep pointing out to the Berners on Facebook that Bernie doesn't have a chance. Their party is so corrupt, the DNC has already chosen Hillary, and they have no say in the matter.

      I really think there will be trouble in this country if both the DNC and the RNC decide to choose their own candidate, ignoring the primary voters.

  • Hey, if you're from an old depressed mill town in Massachusetts, why wouldn't you vote for the guy who promises to onshore manufacturing?

      • Or the machine shop. The rise of the working class is happening. They don't want Democratic Party scraps, they want to participate in the economy. That former Disney IT worker who was forced to train his foreign replacement or lose his severance is the face of the Trump Movement for me. The service economy experiment is a failure.

        Just heard a former Mexican ambassador to the US interviewed. His tone and words suggest his country is crapping in its pants over the prospect of a Trump presidency.

  • It could be one... it could be the other... it could be both... it is very very interesting. If it is Trump though... that is not necessarily a good thing, because seriously? Even if half of those avowed Democrats are true Progressives that is NOT a good thing that they view Trump in a far more favorable light.

    If this is a #NeverTrump thing that is still interesting. I am not okay though with people registered one way to just up and vote in the primary of the opposite party...

      It's worse than that. 18 states have open primaries, which means you don't even have to declare yourself Republican to vote in the Republican primary. That's an invitation for Democrats to screw with the Republican nominee. Today is Super Tuesday with eleven states voting: NINE of those eleven have open primaries, so the day that will very possibly decide that Trump is the Republican nominee, is almost entirely open to Democrat voters. Only Alaska and Oklahoma, with a pitiful 71 delegates between them, aren't holding an open primary today.

      It's stupid. This is how the establishment manipulates and enslaves us. The Republican nominee isn't even chosen by Republicans.

  • I work with quite a few liberals. Three of them decided to vote Republican this year in the primaries. Why? Because they didn't care who the Democratic nominee was, they just wanted the Republican one to be anyone but Trump. I think they voted Rubio. One of them said to me they were pretty sure the Republicans were going to win and they wanted it to be anyone but Trump.

    • Pretty sure the Republicans would win regardles of the nominee...that doesnt make any sense. Their voting Rubio means they fear Trump or Cruz can beat Hillary, not that Rubio will.

  • This is what I'm afraid of, that Democrats voting in Republican primaries will nominate Trump for the Republican Party. The whole system in this country just sucks. Hillary versus Trump? Are you kidding me? I'm pricing real estate in a crocodile-free area of the Outback.
