        • Was lucky to live in a semi-affluent suburb with great public schools. Most of my friends and I were taking Calculus and AP science classes in senior year.

          Many people have forgotten this is possible.

          I realize the article is about NYC but a phrase like nu yorck skules paints the whole state. And the conclusion is just wrong: we're only talking about the minority of students headed for CUNY, not the larger graduate pool

  • Democrat voters don't need to read, you don't have to fill out a job application, they will help you fill out the forms at da welfare office, and you get all the news you need to know from people like Tingles and Madcow on your state paid for plasma TV while sitting in your government paid for section 8 housing and eating Cheetos you bought with what was left on your EBT card after you went to a casino, and don't forget when you get drunk and fall down there is free medical care and all you have to do it make a "X" on da hospital form.   • Bloomberg is a perfect example of straining the gnat and swallowing the camel. The kids can't read, New York City has 90,000 abortions a year, but don't drink too much soda. Liberals don't have true, lasting values and so they follow fads. Now we worship the earth. Now we don't like soda. Now we like Obama. And on and on, one fad after another.

  • From all appearances, nanny doomberg has missed one of the biggest issues. ileterate graduates from public schools in NYC. This seems to be a deriliction of duties to me by mayor dumbass, the superindent of public schools for NYC and those who are suppose to be doing the teaching. Why is he not demanding comprehnesive testing for the graduates and those who are suppose to be doing the teaching? So what you now have are dependants on the system to support them and the dim wits now have more ignoratnt voters, or in this case slaves to the party.

  • It's no wonder parents are choosing to home school their children more than ever. They won't learn the fundamentals in public school, except for the fundamental leftist doctrine, which is drilled into them.

            The dogs there are on the extreme side of good. I've had the Chicago style a number of times, that being my favorite since the 70s. Their Chicago Beef sandwich is a good approximation of the Italian Beef sandwiches most of the Vienna dog shops sold. Delicious. Great fries, too. I have never lived close enough to the joint to experiment with the other items in the menu.

        • You got that right! Comfort food, IMHO. Don't eat 'em often but when I do...mmmmm, damn good. Pile on the kraut, or some mustard/ketchup/chopped onions. Can't beat it for cheap summer time food. Summer? Hell, I'm gonna get some today. I might even fire up the grill on my NYC terrace.

            I get them at Sam's club, $11 and change for a 4 lb package of the bigger than the bun ones. In Publix, they're $5 for a 1 lb package. I separate then into meal size packages, and freeze them.

            I got a 2 basket deep fryer and an electric smoker 2 Christmases ago, and make regular use of both items.

  • The democrats and their operating unions achieve this fine level of academic excellence normally by changing the definition of grades. Ridiculous low levels of math and reading skills, like 30 to 40 % on standardize tests, are call "proficient" or some other such lawyer words for good enough. That way no matter what the teachers teach, most can reach this level, graduate, and the graduation rates are high enough so no one complains.

    The parents have a role in this disaster too. By essentially making their kids wards of the state (feed them breakfast, lunch, watch them after school, allow them to be indoctrinated with leftist propaganda, etc.), protesting racism or favoritism or some other such nonsense when justifiable discipline or earned poor grades are administered, and especially by parents not holding the school systems accountable for this poor performance, they get the poor result is generates. The parents and democrat unions have this synergy that has made a "play it safe" system, where the teachers and parents do not protest the shortcomings of each other (in order to improve), and benefit by not being held accountable for the poor result. Kids lose and are not ready to be functioning adults when they leave. I can imagine them saying, "hey, that's the government's problem. They've been taught to think like a leftist so they will vote democrat. What more do you want?" Give 'em an EBT card and a phone and move on.

    • If they could read, they would wonder why he's worried about soda when he's stuffing his face with a street vendor's hot dog.

      • Contacts tell me street vendors are the only decent, affordable food in the entire city. Same with DC.
