Are electric cars worse for the environment? Yes, yes and more yes. They’re also worse for the poor and middle class.
Electric vehicle subsidies and mandates share an unfortunate, and all too common trait with other government policies: They’re based on “conventional wisdom” that turns out to be wrong. Wealthy consumers who have purchased Teslas and Chevy Bolts primarily to signal their green bona fides for their friends and neighbors, and who have socialized many of the costs of their purchases to those who are less well-off, might wish to take a closer look at the numbers. Their hands may not be quite so clean as they believe.

The article didn't touch on the subject of lithium batteries. The eco freaks need to visit an open pit lithium mine, see where it comes from. It's a frigging mineral! It has to be dug out of the ground! Then show them a smelter and what it takes to process the raw ore into a useable material. Smelters that use tremendous amounts of fossil fuel energy. Frigging fools have no idea of how bad these electric shoeboxes are.

Show him the picture of a lithium mine I posted. The stuff they make those batteries out of is a mineral, it is dug out of the ground.

I can't believe that ran in Politico. You are not allowed to contradict the leftwing agenda at Politico, not if you value your life and career.
By the way, the writer seems to have reached his conclusions without even factoring in the horrors of battery manufacturing which are a nightmare for the environment.
And battery disposal.
I think the government should pass a mandate(sorry for the hetero-normative bigotry) that electric cars can only be fueled with electricity produced by wind and solar.
