  • Step outside tonight, look up at the moon. Imagine being able to say, "Been there, done that." RIP Sir.

    • And in reading about the few others who went to the moon, they say it has a pull on you forever after. You want to go back.

      • Well, as a kid, I remember looking at the moon while they were there. It seemed like an unimaginable journey. Only special people got to go. And he was the one that brought back the memories.

        • I have never ceased to be amazed at how quickly travel in space, even to the moon got taken for granted! An amazing accomplishment by very committed, hardworking folks. They should ALL be honored!

    • Wow, no snark here, that was really good flash. What a way to remember, been there done that...

  • Truly one of our greatest explorers. The others braved the vast oceans, but Neil was the first to brave the ocean of Space and to stand on another heavenly body. What a great loss for America, and all of Mankind.

  • God bless you Neil. In my eyes, you are an American Hero every bit an equal to many of our Founding Fathers (George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Samuel Adams, and Patrick Henry to name a few).

  • I have no personal memory of the lunar landing at all...I was 1 month and 5 days shy of 2 at the time.

      • No, JP...It was actually a hint. Do the math...what was yesterday? I'm really disappointed in Poppa cuz he knew and FORGOT.

        • I'm sorry sweetie, it has been the week from hell for me.
2 days of getting all the rest of the loose stuff out of the house (NO help), Wed I was in the clinic all day with kidney pain recurrence (still no diagnosis), Thur and Fri I was doing all the electrical work in my house so we can get inspections on Monday, and my truck jumped timing Fri afternoon, so it is sitting in the street in front of my house waiting for my mechanic to open on Mon. More fighting with the Mrs, and I am ready to chuck it all!!

          HAPPY (belated) BIRTHDAY!!
          MUWAH!!!

          • Jeez, dude, that's a pretty substantial excuse for missing a birthday. Did the dog eat your homework, too? Heck, you almost have your own country music song there.

          • Just got a call from my mother. Someone ran a red light and sideswiped them today. She has a broken wrist and many bruises, my dad had to have an MRI because he whacked his head, he has many bruises too. They don't know what shape the car is in.
Because of the hurricane threat, all my appts cancelled on me today, putting me further behind schedule and we only got some drizzle.
I'm really not having a good time.

          • OMG, Poppa! You truly have a dark cloud above you! Take this opportunity to rest, relaxing and try to reduce your stress and anxiety. I hear Mojitos are pretty good for that.

          • A Tampa Beer Summit? HMMMMM.
Unfortunately, it will have to wait until after this weekend. I'm picking up my BIL and SIL at the airport tonight, and they will be here for a few days.
The flight arrives at 10:27 pm. I'm just about as tired as Dean these days.

          • Pretty close.
However, if things get much crazier here, I may be in the market for an opium summit.

          • Peculiar thumb thumping here. Late night pickup at Tampa airport, marvelous timing.

I got 5.5 hours last night and the boy got home before first grader retrieval. Another nap to be had!

It has been around a year since our initial IHTM-Tampa contingent beer summit, hasn't it?

          • Good morning, gentlemen. I am hoping to sleep this night, unlike last night. My assistant babysitter is out of town for the 3rd week. The boy started his 2nd of three jobs today, professorating at UT. The toddler was awake to 1am this morning and I stayed up with her, then was unable to sleep. The gates of delirium have been mine all day. I did get a 40 minute nap this afternoon. Tomorrow I get to handle the delivery and retrieval of the first grader as well as the toddler.

Reading Joe's post puts me in the frame of mind you suggest, but I cannot be trusted for clear thought at this time. Let's discuss tomorrow. You guys know, I'm hardly ever NOT up for a beer! This is one of those off times. Evening tomorrow might be good.

          • Wow. How did that happen? 5 entries! I still have 10 minutes to edit the one in the middle of the five. Somebody's got no splaining to do!

          • Thanks drb. He's got two separate gigs at University South Florida in research labs and 1 at University Tampa teaching fresh faced high school grads Psych 200. Busy guy. Freshly doctorated and deeply in debt, but fortunately his degree is in a field that isn't as hard to find work in as, say, what was that other one our former nuisance troll had... Lesbian Animal Husbandry?

          • Glad to see I wasn't the only one waiting for a train to come rolling through there too. Chin up poppa, "What does not kill us can only make us stronger." ;)

          • No chucking it all allowed, man. Steel up, brother! Punch the sky! Too bad I'm so far away from your abode, cuz I'd lend you a hand on my off days, which are practically all of them.

  • I'm still pissed at him for messing up his first line (should have been "one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind"), but I'm sorry to hear he died. It's the passing of an era. Under Nobama, NASA's manned program has been gutted.

  • I was 10, and was sitting in my grandmother's living room with my 2 brothers and 3 of my cousins. We were so excited! My grandmother was worried that the LM would sink into the surface of the moon.

    • I wouldn't be surprised if, just for a moment, Armstrong didn't have the same worry that your grandmother did!

      • You notice he stepped down with one foot still one the ldder to be sure he could get back into the landing module!

      • OMG!!! Doesn't ANYONE proof stroies anymore? That's a rhetorical question. Clearly they don't. Another example of forgetting our history almost sooner than it is created!

        • So Kip, you are an old fart too. (teehee) Gotta be if you remember that song. I'm a Neil Young fan, have been for ages, but there is a big difference between dreaming up songs to sing while stoned and actual deeds. Everyone here has already said it, we lost a true American hero, and I'll add this: Neil Armstrong, a man with the bark on, a man who could get things done. He will be missed.

  • A Hero, An American, A leader, I remember sitting in the living room with my parents watching our new RCA color TV/Stereo thingy and seeing this. God it was awesome to think we put a man on another planet. But we had leadership then, something that is really lacking now. God Bless Mr. Armstrong. His family wished for us to look up at the moon and a clear night and "wink" at Neil as he looks back....
