Belgium’s 20-stone minister for public health is accused of being too big to be ‘credible’ – but hits back saying ‘it’s what’s inside that counts’

Defiant: The politician has shrugged off the criticism, pointing to her experience as both a GP and a minister in the nation's previous government

Belgium’s 20-stone minister for public health is accused of being too big to be ‘credible’ – but hits back saying ‘it’s what’s inside that counts.’ So what’s inside? We’d guess about: 20 Belgian waffles, 10 triple bacon-cheeseburgers, 1 gallon of french fries, 10 gallons of double chocolate ice cream with 30 cans of whipped cream, 1 BBQ’ed hog, 3 entire prime ribs and 10 banana cream pies. We also wonder if when she’s flies it’s on a C5 Galaxy?

  • 20 Belgian waffles, 10 triple bacon-cheeseburgers, 1 gallon of french fries, 10 gallons of double chocolate ice cream with 30 cans of whipped cream, 1 BBQ’ed hog, 3 entire prime ribs and 10 banana cream pies.

And a partridge in a pear tree?

  • She needs to contact the wookie and sign up for the Let's move program. The shocks and suspension are relieved that she has exited the vehicle.

  • Being fat has nothing to do with credibility. Obama is thin as a rail so... anyway I feel bad for her I hope she gets herself regularly checked up by a Doctor and is considering a healthier lifestyle.

    • I agree that in general credibility would not be tied to weight or any appearance, for that matter. But when world wide public health officials are preaching a vastly lower BMI and healthier lifestyle, her appearance DOES matter. Its the same as the FLOTUS preaching what as schools should serve children to eat when she has no nutrition or dietary credentials to back up what she says. Would YOU believe anything thiswoman told youbaboutvmaintaining a heathy weight, eating well and getting a litte exercise?

      • I guess my point was that, I know of Doctors that do smoke but tell their patients to stop smoking because their hearts and bodies can't take it. Should the patient not hear that and continue to smoke because the Doctor is a smoker?

My Mom used to do things that she should have never done but she would scream and rant if I did them...

I see what you are saying though. I guess do we shoot the messenger or listen to the message and then choose if we should apply the wise message in our lives despite of the hypocrisy/outward appearance/behavior of the messenger?

As for me personally, I wouldn't take her seriously, however, I do take what she says seriously. It is important to be healthy and so on and so forth. I guess it would help immensely if she wasn't so immense herself.

        • I think the thing that is more important than mere diet and exercise is the willpower to change the diet and exercise. Getting told what to do by someone that has so much trouble following their own guidelines is a trifle hard to take.

I think that it would have been better if she was only a little heavy, or if her message was about something other than health. All's I can say, is out of all the available people they wanted for their spokesperson, they picked *her*? I have more of an issue with the people that hired her than her. Surely, they had thought about the optics of this. I actually think it was either a setup, or their leaders are well and truly stupid. I actually feel sorry for her -- she has been well and truly and most cruelly mocked, and I don't like to see that happen to anybody that doesn't richly deserve it.

          • Yeah there is something to be said about those that placed her there, that needs to be looked at and then for her to believe it enough to take the role. There is a lot of denial on her part or arrogance and there is something strange on those that placed her there.

Yes it is hard to take. Sometimes the messenger sucks but the message is helpful, but yeah not defending the choice of her. Even though I dislike the hypocrisy that comes with Michelle Obama's program because of her own behavior, I do believe that people are well served to be healthier BUT the TRUE problem with MO's program is that she is not an elected official and she essentially forced herself upon people. She used whatever powers she has, that were not given to her by the people and abused it. That to me is the biggest problem much more than her imparting information which is not new and can be found anywhere and it can be helpful. Also her measures are very draconian that is a problem.

Now if this minister in Belgium abuses her power and institutes draconian measures I am going to have a serious problem with her then.

    • I would agree with you on this other then the fact that she's the Minister for Public Health. In that regard she has no credibility whatsoever. If she's unable to control her own eating habits how can she tell anyone how or what they can eat???

      • I understand your point.

I know of Doctors and nurses and other health care workers that smoke, they drink and are fat themselves and they do tell others how to live their lives. So it is not very surprising to me that this is the case here.

She SHOULD loose the weight and perhaps make it a thing where she is using that in order to be an example to people, but as we talk about hypocrisy here or lack of credibility because she is fat and is telling others to be healthy it is not new.

        Not defending her though...

        • You reminded me of a great line; George Burns dedicated one his books to the widows of his first 3 doctors, all of whom insisted he stop drinking martinis and smoking cigars...

  • Only government could match that person with that job title. "It's what is inside that counts." Really? Okay, how about a compulsive eating disorder brought on by any number of psychological problems is what's inside. Again, only government.

  • It appears Belgium Bertha has quite the appetite. I'm surprised the sow can even walk. She might have a weight problem but I know she could stand to lose 150lb. without missing a jelly donut or a whole pan of lasagna. She should be careful. We don't want to hear about her dieing from getting a half a summer sausage lodged in her windpipe or choking on a chicken wing caught sideways in her disposal. I bet she has her fat ass parked on one of those special carts at the grocery store everytime she's on a starving spree.
