Big solar plants on western public land could power 7 million homes. “The Department of Interior has made 285,000 acres at 17 sites in six western states” Amazing timing! It appears all this largess has conveniently happened about the time Obama needs megamoney from megawatt companies to bolster his campaign funds. Anyone taking bets that the EPA will start handing out more $500 million loan guarantees any day now?

I have designed some machines for the manufacturing and testing of solar PV panels and pretty much know the real economics of this industry. Fun Fact: PV panels never, NEVER, pay back their initial costs.

Solar PV panels never payback their cost. You are burning your money. If the big-gov totalitarians can get energy prices to almost triple, solar PV panels will pay for themselves at about 20 years out. Then you have to buy new ones.
You're not using the neutopian thermo multiplier panels filled with concentrated unicorthanol. Those give over eleventyleven times or something like that. Plus, they put billions of out of work Americans hope for change, and shit like that.

I wonder why the EPA isn't screaming about all the gnats, mosquitos, rats, and ticks that will be displaced or killed for this project to proceed. They can't convince me that all that acreage doesn't contain any enviromentally sensitive areas.
Imagine the energy independence we could achieve if the moron opened up acreage like that to DRILLING.
Okay, so Obama can't allow the building of a single pipeline down from Canada but he will allow 285,000 acres of land to be bulldozed under for solar power farms. Take that Sierra Club.
It's pre-election vote buying, the odds are these solar farms will never be built or, if built will take years to complete, entail massive cost overruns and will never generate anything near the wattage promised while the consumers' utility bills soar.
