    I was just watching FOX News, and had to change the channel.
    Cuomo was talking about the storm, and he is so monotone and boring, he put me to sleep!
    That must be how he gets all the stupid laws passed, he bores everyone to sleep and only the conscious vote.

  • Down in DC, 1/2 an inch of snow is a disaster. The big city liberals will freak out, and us folks in the sticks just fire up the snowblower and deal with it.

  • These East Coast blizzards always slay me. The only reason they're national news is because New York is the national news hub. If the talking heads at Fox News and the other networks have to wade through snow to get to work, suddenly snow is a calamity.

    Meanwhile, every day, somewhere else in America it's snowing like that and the talking heads couldn't care less.

    • Thank you. I have never understood the panic that snow engenders in the Northeast. Its winter. They get snow pretty much every year. When it snows in South Texas, people panic. They don't know how to drive in it, they don't have chains and snowtires, etc. That makes sense. But it makes no sense when New York and Boston are complely paralyzed by even a big snow storm!

    • That's because in the rest of the country, it's just a bunch on cavemen anyway. They can throw a couple more logs on the fire in front of the cave, they'll be ok.

      • Those New York talking heads should spend a winter in the Keweenaw Peninsula here in Michigan: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keweenaw_Peninsula#Climate. I think that's one of the places in the UP where they don't even bother plowing most of the time. They just sprinkle gravel on the fresh snow and then drive on top until it's good and packed down. Packed down snow with a little gravel in it makes a pretty good road, actually. By the end of the winter the passing cars might be roof high but...

        • I heard in the UP they have only one snowstorm a year.

          It starts in November and ends in April.

          Once I spent 3 days/4 nights in Upstate NY, in the Utica area (my bro lived up there). This was between Christmas and new year's. It DIDN'T snow for about 3 hours. The sun came out at 9 AM one day, and at noon it started snowing again.

          It wasn't a storm. It was just a grey, constant, light snowfall coming from Great Lakes moisture. "Only" about 4" accumulated in that time. But by the end of winter, you walk on the streets there (outside Utica, no sidewalks, just farms), and you've got 8' high walls of snow on either side of the road.

          I also heard about those coastal "mudslide" storms you guys get in CA, how they hit the Sierra Nevada and the 8" rainstorm turns into a 10' snowstorm in Tahoe. I also had the pleasure of bicycling in the Sierras, over Monitor and Tioga passes, where after the first snowstorm they bring the gate down and the road is closed until the stuff melts.

          • As a resident of Reno I lived right where the Donner Pass starts, which is where I-80 goes through the mountains. Traveling through there in the winter is bizarre. There's too much snow to plow it - they have to bring in front-end loaders to carve through it and move it, so they end up with sheer white walls on either side of the expressway thirty or forty feet high.

          • One winter when I was in NJ, we had a 3' snow storm. But the place I worked at was up a long road with open fields on either side. The snow drifted to 12' on the road, and they brought out the front end loaders to clear the road. They did one lane, 10' wide. It's OK if nobody's coming the other way, or, if like me, you weren't driving a tractor trailer with a flatbed loaded with salt, sand, and concrete mix. Going to work was odd, because you saw nothing but sheer walls of snow, and if a truck was coming the other way, you had to back up 1/2 mile to where he could get past you. We had no choice but to go to work, because we were delivering the sand and salt to Home Depot that everyone needed to take care of their driveway.

    • They did that once already, predicting a snowmageddon that did not happen. I remember the pic, maybe even on this site - empty streets and maybe, MAYBE an inch of snow on the ground.
