According to the story, the kid was punished for disrupting class, not for saying "bless you." Sorry, but, if there's a no-talking rule in force, that means that ALL extraneous talking is to cease, not just secular remarks.
Trust a far right wingnut to try to turn a kid's impudent behavior into a religious war. Whatever happened to that Personal Responsibility that you far righters claim to value so highly? Are you really saying that kids shouldn't have to follow classroom rules, as long as they're saying or doing something that's pleasing to right wing extremists? :D

This is what teachers are worried about? How about teaching your students how to correctly fill out a jod application, or how to do simple arithmetic, or how to express a coherent though on paper. Some of the job applicants I get actually have to bring in other people to fill out their applications for them because they can't read the questions (these are people who have completed high school, by the way). But by all means, let's worry about people saying "Bless you". I swear, I read this stuff and I just want to punch a wall.
His lame excuse was that God Bless you (specifically) was used in olden times when sneezing was thought to be caused by demons, so you were blessed to have driven them out. Sicne we don'tbelieve in any of that anymore, we shouldn't say it. Except EVERY culture has a similar response. German-good health, others "Jesus" others simply Bless you,others God bless you. Anone know what the specifics are in Hindi, Bhuddism or Sihkism? Or for that matter, Any African tribal cusotme, Native American, Aztec, etc?
I would have the kid say "Bite Me" after the next sneeze...Wonder what the teacher would do then?
My wife used to work in a place where someone got offended when you said God Bless You to someone who sneezed. So the girls all decided to use a different phrase. When someone sneezed they all said "Fuck You". Nobody ever complained about that!
