Strange, but true: Charlie Rangel offering tax tips to his constituents

Despite being censured by the House of Representatives for repeated, egregious tax code violations, New York Democrat Charlie Rangel is playing H&R Block for his constituents, offering them tax tips.

Tax Tip #1: "Don't report the income on your villa in the Dominican Republic."

The New York Daily News has the decidedly odd story:

Among the ethics violations for which the Harlem Democrat was punished by his colleagues just before Christmas was failing to pay taxes on his DominIcan villa. But Rangel nevertheless just emailed his latest “Rangel Report” featuring tax advice for constituents.

“On its face, Charlie Rangel giving tax advice is more than just ironic, it’s surreal,” said Baruch College politics maven Doug Muzzio.

“On the other hand, Charle Rangel knows the tax law, his constituents need tax advice and he can provide it,” Muzzio added. “It’s a service for his constituents.”

Rangel’s spokesman declined to comment on the mailing, except to note that he does it every year.

  • That's probably why Chaaaaly's "constituents" are all a bunch of crooks and thieves too! THERE, I SAID IT! (Hyperbole is OK now. Rachel Madcow said so [appeal to non-authority])

  • Next - Timothy "Turbo Tax" Geitner will be dressing up like Richard Simmons and running all night long infomercials for his new "Deducting to the Oldies" DVD.

  • Remember, despite his tax cheating, hidden wealth, ethics violations, lies and moral failures, Charlie Rangel was re-elected in November of 2010. His constituents approved of Charlie's sticking it to "The Man".

    • His constituents approved of Charlie’s sticking it to “The Man”.

Wait a minute...he IS the MAN. Wha?? How'd that go again?

  • Rangel needs to be in a jail cell with Wesley Snipes.

I have some sympathy for Wesley Snipes, at least he does something for his income, the fact that he didn't pay taxes on it, well, can you blame him? At least the money he made wasn't tax money to begin with and neither Charlie nor any politician, or public servant for that matter, can make that case!

  • Like a drunk telling someone how to sober up. Please give me a break. Rangel needs to be in a jail cell with Wesley Snipes.

He should have been expelled from the House but Nancy need her poster boy for reform near by.
