Coldest. Year. Ever. Through May 6, this has been the coldest year in U.S. history. Almost certainly, this has been caused by Global Warming. Somehow. (The smart people will be along shortly to explain, so we can feel properly guilty.)

It was a rough winter. But coldest in the nation's history? I don't think.so. Warren' t we bBraum's in a mini ice age the years of the Revolution? A ND . Aren't you in the southwest? If you look at the map at the link you will see that the southwest has been an exception. Here in Michigan, my father is 95 and insists he's never seen a winter like we just had. It wasn't so much how low the temperatures got. It was the fact that they went down in November and stayed there. Snow we got in November was still here in April, buried under all the snow that came after. We had unrelenting cold weather, without a break, and when April activities like golf leagues and softball leagues were supposed to start, there was still snow on the ground. It was weird. The weather this year has been almost apocalyptic.
I am in South Central Texas. We had earlier cold than usual, and lower temps than usual,, longer period of coled that usual. I just don't think it was the coldest winter in + years. The above graph doesn't even start until 1880 and as I said above, accurate reporting was not until later than that.
Oh I'm sure you're right. Go back far enough and any record will no longer be the record. When you were a kid do you remember reading stories about Dutch ice skaters racing down frozen rivers? Those stories were written before 1850, when the Little Ice Age ended. They used to have frost fairs on the Thames in London: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/River_Thames_frost_fairs. Now, the Thames never freezes over in London.

Don't panic. The warmers will figure out some way to add "smoothing" to this to ensure that last temperature dip disappears.
It's called creative averaging. If the numbers are too far in the wrong direction, they average them with the numbers that show the extremes they are looking to prove, then add 32, because that is the difference between the freezing point on the Celsius and Fahrenheit scales.
I dunno. "Cold is hot" seems to fit with the modern American culture where evil is good.

If I'm reading this chart correctly, there really hasn't been any real warming or cooling since records have been kept. I see four distinct cycles with the first and third cycles being a bit cooler between 1880 and 1920 and then again between 1940 and 1980. In other words, to this untrained observer we have a forty-year climate pattern and we are heading into another cooling cycle. Am I right?
Sure, to the untrained eye (like yours) the datapoints suggest nothing has changed, but people go to college and get graduate degrees in CLIMATE so they can coax the warming trend out of datapoints like these. That's what a CLIMATE degree is for. Silence, uneducated cur.
