    “Here comes the ObamaCare tax bill.

    The cost of President Obama’s massive health-care law will hit Americans in 2014 as new taxes pile up on their insurance premiums and on their income-tax bills.

    Most insurers aren’t advertising the ObamaCare taxes that are added on to premiums, opting instead to discretely pass them on to customers while quietly lobbying lawmakers for a break.

    But one insurance company, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama, laid bare the taxes on its bills with a separate line item for “Affordable Care Act Fees and Taxes.”

    The new taxes on one customer’s bill added up to $23.14 a month, or $277.68 annually, according to Kaiser Health News. It boosted the monthly premium from $322.26 to $345.40 for that individual.

    The new taxes and fees include a 2 percent levy on every health plan, which is expected to net about $8 billion for the government in 2014 and increase to $14.3 billion in 2018.

    There’s also a $2 fee per policy that goes into a new medical-research trust fund called the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute.

    Insurers pay a 3.5 percent user fee to sell medical plans on the HealthCare.gov Web site.

    ObamaCare supporters argue that federal subsidies for many low-income Americans will not only cover the taxes, but pay a big chunk of the premiums.

    But ObamaCare taxes don’t stop with health-plan premiums.

    Americans also will pay hidden taxes, such as the 2.3 percent medical-device tax that will inflate the cost of items such as pacemakers, stents and prosthetic limbs.

    Those with high out-of-pocket medical expenses also will get smaller income-tax deductions.”

  • This article is why everyone should say fuck the cACA, and just pay the fine. It was designed to be unaffordable, and to bleed us dry. They were just hoping we would be too stupid to see through it.

    • Yep... paying the fine... although I don't think I should. The tax is unconstitutional I don't care what the Supreme Court says as it was not sold to us as a tax. This is really disgusting.

        So you don't like having to foot the bill for your own health care? Tell you what: I don't like having to pay hugely inflated costs for MY health care, because other Americans can't or won't pay for theirs. Ensuring that all (or most, since the GOP objects to universal health care) have decent coverage is less costly in the long run, and much more equitable, than the old "I've got mine, screw you" mentality the right clings to.

          On June 28, 2012, Roberts delivered the majority opinion in National Federation of Independent Business v. Sebelius, which upheld the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act by a 5–4 vote. The Court ruled that although the "individual mandate" component of the act was unconstitutional under the Commerce Clause, it could be construed as a tax and therefore valid under Congress's authority to "lay and collect taxes."

If it's more important to you to thumb your nose at Obama than it is to see that your poor wife has affordable health care, that's your choice. But don't come crying to the rest of us if and when your family ends up with health care expenses that you can't afford to pay.

      Now that we've got that settled, puzzle me this: Who do you suppose is paying for the emergency treatment that these alleged "benefit sucking leaches (sic---didn't they teach you spelling wherever you went to school?) receive? You do realize that depriving people of affordable health care won't prevent them from getting sick, don't you? And that small medical problems tend to turn into great big ones, if they're not treated properly?

      If you said, "We all are," you're absolutely right. Now tell me, why would you want these alleged "leaches" to get costly emergency treatment at the public's expense, rather than cheap, cost effective health care at the public's expense? Because you're going to be paying one way or the other. (Unless, of course, you're one of them, which is entirely possible. Seems like most of the posters here do get government benefits.) Wouldn't you rather pay for the cost effective option, than the one that's up to ten times that expensive?

    • Roberts knows the Constitution better than you armchair warriors do, Not So Deep Thinker. I doubt he was happy about upholding an act that Republicans hate so much (and are going to hate even more, once people get used to it), but it's his job to support the Constitution.

      Incidentally, it's not true that nothing is free. The rich and powerful have been riding a gravy train ever since Bush the Less came into office, at the expense of peons like you and me. The main difference is that I think that's unethical, and you think it's just fine, and the natural order of things.

          Sorry, my boy, but the GOP has already tried that argument, and got nowhere with it. The plain, bald fact is that most Americans WANT affordable health care. And the more intelligent ones realize what the rest of the industrialized world has known for decades: that prevention is much, much cheaper than superdeluxe damage control.

          • Sugar pie, I hate to have to keep reminding you of this, but "Obamacare" is a COMPROMISE. Many of us Americans would rather have seen a single payer system, which works well in most other industrialized nations for a fraction of what we're paying, on average, for an inequitable system. But, because you righties screamed and cried for a system in which the middle man could rake off big profits, that's what we've got.

            Go cry to them if you don't like what you have to pay for health care. They're the ones raising the premiums.

          • They can have affordable healthcare, if they start paying cash. Insurance isn't the answer except for catastrophic situations, which we can't buy a policy for because we're too old, and the people that can buy it won't.

            You've said some pretty naive things here, but this one has to be one of the most ridiculous. You won't pay for a basic insurance policy for your wife because you say you can't afford it----but you CAN afford to pay cash for an appendectomy, for example, or a broken leg, or a hypertensive crisis?

            Oh, I know what you're thinking, although you'd never in a million years admit it. You're thinking that she could just go to the ER, and then stiff the hospital. Well, hospitals don't have magical money trees. They expect to be paid for their services, and depend on that revenue to remain in business. Which is why it's terribly irresponsible NOT to have insurance.

            As you've been reminded numerous times, the #1 reason for personal bankruptcies in the U.S. today is medical bills. And, incidentally, many of the people who can't pay their medical bills HAVE insurance. So kindly knock off the roseate fantasy that we can all magically manage to afford any medical problem that crops up, if only we will it to be so. This is real life, not a fairy tale----and, in real life, only the wealthiest Americans can afford to pay out of pocket for health care.

    • Uh....Joe? The GOP has spent the last three years neglecting their jobs, just to try to get the ACA repealed, discredited, damaged, declared unconstitutional, and boycotted. And, each time, they've failed in their mission. They will continue to fail, because, no matter what kind of high-flying idiotology they spew, most people WANT and NEED affordable health care.

      Now, you can keep pretending you can see into the future, and hoping to prevent affordable health care, but it's not going away. Like it or not, there will come a day when you can actually go to a doctor when you first experience worrisome symptoms, rather than showing up in my ER with an expensive condition that could have been prevented months or years earlier.

      Sorry, but most thinking Americans care more about their own health issues than about lining the pockets of politically connected have-mores.

      Now that we've got that settled, please tell me why you don't think Obama is entitled to enjoy the same perks of his office that all other modern U.S. presidents have enjoyed. And try at least to PRETEND that bigotry has nothing to do with your attitude. :>P
