Common Core says teach Gettysburg Address without mentioning Civil War. Because it would be unfair to assume students know what the Civil War is, thereby giving those students who do know about the Civil War an advantage. Horrors! Imagine that: students with knowledge having an advantage in school.

  • Sadly, it's getting to the point where it will take a civil war to save this nation - or else the Balkans are our future...

    • I've said that this nation is heading toward another civil war. This one will be over those who work and those who only are taking. Those of us who work and contribute are so tired of those who are just taking and sitting on their lazy asses all the time saying "give it to me and you owe me what I want" Well I don't owe you a damn thing. You owe it to yourself to be self supporting and contributing. Those who are truly in need of help should receive it, those who are doing nothing but sucking of the government tit, you getting nothing. You get busted for something and you are on the government dime, its gone. (so many arrested ask what about my check). Well your check just got given to someone who actually needs it, not the skank, or the punk ass that was arrested.

      Women if your baby's daddy gets his ass arrested, guess what. Your check and all your free stuff are gone. Its time to use the Asian philosophy, public embarrassment brought upon the family for the deeds of a family member.

      • I do know that if you are on Social Security Disability, and you go to prison, your checks are forefeited while you are serving time, but they resume when you are released.
        I know someone that had that experience.

        • Same if a young person is gettin VA benefits as a survivor. In prison it all goes away. And in this case, if you are in for any length of time, it goes away permanently, since there is an age cut off.

  • Why do liberals keep re-writing history? In most of these so called "skools" run by tax fattened union thugs, they can't even teach them how to read cursive, now they willfully distort history to promote their communist bullshit agenda.

    He left out mention of God, something he's done many times.

  • Dumbing down is all that this is. Learn from the past or doomed to repeat it. The current path that this nation is on, doomed to repeat it. The reason common core wishes to ignore the Civil War is so that those who don't know about it won't question state rights against federal oppression. They won't question an ever encroaching federal government that wants to control every aspect if their lives. See obamacare.

    For all of you who think Lincoln was some kind of national hero, he was far from it. He trampled upon the US Constitution just like the current president from Illinois. His emancipation proclamation was for the southern states only. He left intact the indentured servitude practice of the north. He knew that the factories, mines and other northern entities needed the forced labor. Until the 54th Massachuset was created, more blacks fought for the south. Sherman and Grant were two of the most racist individuals that were in the Northern Army. Sherman used the freed slaves as fodder between himself and Longstreet during his march to the sea.

    Parents need to take charge of their children's education. They need to challenge the indoctrinators and so called educators. If you don't push back now, your children won't be your children. They will be the children of the state. Sound familiar?

    • A n d the Northern states, particularly, was the ho MM e of the slave traders. They made their fortunes capturing and transporting slaves to the south and other locations in the Caribbean. They overlook that in the history the wrote.

    • Trust me, the last thing they want is civil war. We would end up being the only ones to survive, since the left is considerably less well armed than we are.

      • I agree, the progs don't want to fight and couldn't. They want a race or political war, or some type of uprising so dear leader can declare martial law before his current reign ends.

        • Martial law won't go as easy for them as they are hoping.
          They will control the cities that are already hopelessly leftist, but the rest of the country, where all the real guns and people that can shoot accurately, are located, will be a much tougher row to hoe.

    While I would go so far as to agree that the Address stands on it own as a brilliant summation of what America and the Constitution mean, to deliberately deprive it of context is simply absurd.

    But then, that's what they try to do with the Constitution itself, deprive it of all context, so that the real meaning and intent of, for example, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion", which simply means there was to be no official Church of the United States, as there was (and remains) a Church of England or of Sweden. Without context, any words become much more malleable and thereby less meaningful -- they mean, as Humpty Dumpty told Alice, whatever you wish them to mean.

    • Without context and actually reading the source itself we get things like separation of church and state, which exists nowhere in the Constitution. Common Core's objective apparently is to make children socially functional but not educated.

      • Bingo. Educated people are much harder to manipulate. Teach a kid what to think and you have a slave. Teach a kid how to think and he will probably steal your car.

  • Should we teach Shakespeare without mentioning sonnets and plays?

    Should we teach the I Have A Dream speech without mentioning the Civil Rights Movement?

    Should we teach the passage of the ACA without mentioning certain presidential promises about keeping doctors and health plans if you like them? Period.
