Congressional solution to debt debacle: A brand new way to pass the buck

The traditional Washington way to solve a sticky problem is to create a blue-ribbon commission, task it to find a solution and issue a report, then ignore whatever it produces. Works every time. But the current bunch is not satisfied with the tired old ways of doing things and is proposing a BOLD NEW initiative!

congress
Hey, let's turn Congress upside down

Huffing and Puffing Post breaks the news:

Debt ceiling negotiators think they’ve hit on a solution to address [tax and spending issues]….

Create a new Congress.

This “Super Congress,” composed of members of both chambers and both parties… would be granted extraordinary new powers. Under a plan put forth by Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Harry Reid (D-Nev.), [legislation would create] a 12-member panel made up of 12 lawmakers — six from each chamber and six from each party.

Legislation approved by the Super Congress…would then be fast-tracked through both chambers, where it COULDN’T be amended by simple, regular lawmakers, who’d have the ability only to cast an up or down vote. With the weight of both leaderships behind it, a product originated by the Super Congress would have a strong chance of moving through the little Congress and quickly becoming law.

Pardon our stupidity, but what makes anyone think this evenly divided body will be able to agree on a lunch order, let alone solutions to contentious financial problems?

If they do produce something useful, the Little Congress can’t ignore it so voting no is the next best thing. And lastly, the biggest obstacle to progress isn’t even in Congress. If we’re not mistaken, he’s probably on about the 14th hole about now.

  • We cannot allow the half of Americans that pay no taxes to bear the burden of the other half who aren't paying their fair share.

  • LOL, "Huffing and Puffing Post"! When I first skimmed it I thought it said Huffington Post, great play on words! LOL!!!

  • Mitch McConnell ought to be beat for having his name attached to what amounts to a list-ditch grasp at the power the donks are deservedly losing.

What part of "This is a deal for suckers" hasn't he figured out?

  • There is one really scary part about this. It sure does eliminate that "majority rules" concept. Pretty timely idea since the D's have lost that and are about to become the minority in 2012. Mitch the btich is OK with this? McConnell needs to go, NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I like Heinlein's idea better. A character of his once proposed a bicameral legislative body in which the first house passed laws by a super majority and the second was charged with repealing laws with only a simple one.

  • I think someone was just pulling the HuffPo's leg, knowing that only Progressives are stupid enough to take an inane idea like this seriously.

  • This is not a new idea and it is not a good idea. This would be a smaller body of hand-picked boobs and yes men who would be completely unresponsive to the citizenry but would be wholly owned and operated by various powerful and unconstitutional interest groups or individuals. You think it's bad now...the old Soviet Politburo would be jealous, if this ever got off the ground!

  • If "bucks" were footballs, any of these SOBs would make Peyton Manning look like the 3rd string backup for the Frozen Sneakers Semi-pro team.

  • So how exactly would these "super" congresspeople be chosen? Through secret ballot, picking straws, a game of rock/paper/sissors/lizzard/spock? Doesn't seem like anything with representation to me!

    • So how exactly would these “super” congresspeople be chosen?

Obummer will appoint them from the "left" side of the aisle, kinda like his next batch of czars! He'll make sure everything gets fixed just the way he wants it.

      • I like the cut of your jib. I think that these duels could be set up as a tournament. When we get it down to the final surviving 12 congressmorons, then we can throw them in jail for illegal duelling, and problem over!

        • And of course, make it pay-per-view on cable, and the income could go towards reducing the debt.

          • I'd pay to watch that. Especially the end, "Surpise, your going to jail! What? You didnt see that coming? Suckers!"

          • That's what I've always said about the gang-bangers. The cops know who they are, they identify themselves as such. If they like shooting at each other so much, round them up, put them all in the L.A. Coliseum, throw in a bunch of guns and ammo, and let them have at it.
When there's only one left, he quite obviously killed someone, so execute him for murder, and problem solved.

        • Big Bang is too funny! My nephew and I sit and watch it together because we don't know too many other people that get the physics and other scientific references.

          • I don't watch much TV so I'm not familiar with that show, when is it on and what channel? (the physics and scientific references caught my attention, sounds like it may be right up my alley)

          • I don’t watch much TV so I’m not familiar with that show, when is it on and what channel?

LOL!! I read the comment and not the name, almost thought it was Oblivious!

CBS, was on Monday nights, moved to Thurs, but not on right now, Big Brother is on there.

          • Oh, Come on now, Poppa, I was polite and didn't bash the show without knowing the first thing about it. How could you possibly confuse ME with HER?? I'm deeply, deeply offended. Bless my heart!

I do have 3 jobs so that doesn't leave much time for TV...Well, if it's football, hockey or the occasional movie then yeah I watch TV. I don't get into very many sit-coms or dramas. I did, however, enjoy "Six Feet Under" when it was on HBO. I'll have to look for "Big Bang".

          • that would be for Mr Ed. and Mr Ad. to decide upon...All I can do is give a thumb down to certain posters.

          • Hey there, drb, that's where I did the all that, but only in the first page where 13 trips and a deuce went down, but just on the page that comes up first. Maybe I'll go check the 'previous comments' section of Holy Moly for more grievous troll sludge in a little while but first I gotta clean my mallet!

          • I normally sweep through and get a few on our uninspired troll and keep quiet about it. I might say something about the odd ones that come up but generally don't acknowledge anything about Oblo. But this morning a strolled through the Holy Moly - just the part that shows, not the 'previous comments' section and hit 13 triples and one double. That's worth an honorable mention.

Ignore the prevaricator, apply pressure to the downward digit and move along. Don't feed the troll.

    • a game of rock/paper/sissors/lizzard/spock?

Ha. Love it. All of the reps would keep picking Spock, and nothing would get done.

  • A bit faster than a speeding turtle.
More powerful, and with loco motives.
Able to fund tall buildings in a single bound.
    Look! Up in the sky!
Just like ol' Byrd. They cause us pain. It's Super Congress!

Yes, it's Super Congress - visitors upon us of strangeness like they're from another planet who care for Earth with EPA powers and abilities to impose tax hikes far beyond the ability of mortal men to pay. Super Congress - who can't change the course of mighty Joan Rivers yet can make Michael Steele bend over with their bare hands, and who, disguised as elected officials, such as mild mannered Republicans ruined by the spirit of a great metropolitan capital, fights the never ending battle against Truth, Justice and the American Way.
