It’s interesting that these so-called “endangered” tortoises seem to pop-up all over the place whenever the Feds want to lock up some land or prevent oil drilling. The little buggers appear to be in California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. The only thing that appears to be endangered is freedom.

Watching the video of the protest again this morning, and saw a BLM Nazi Taser someone, but the other people yanked the wires before he could be put down. Then the Nazis were run off by the protesters, since they were outnumbered. This is going to get interesting. Still waiting for verification of the snipers that were said to be there.
When the tortoise scam peters out fracking causing earthquakes will be the next great lie. It's already being floated.

I worked four years for the Fish and Wildlife Service. One day shortly before I left, I was riding with the woman responsible for counting them. I was intrigued by the fact that they were listed as endangered and we have been spending millions of dollars per year for many years to protect them but they were only then being counted for the first time. After gently pressing her on the question of how something can be listed as endangered when nobody has any idea how many of them are out there, I finally got her to admit there were, best guess, "hundreds of thousands" of them scattered around the West.
The desert tortoise is a scam just like Global Warming. Fish and Wildlife is full of scams. As any western cattle rancher will tell you, the tortoises do quite well sharing range with cattle.
I knew a guy down in Costa Rica. After Korea he went down there and was known as "the Gold Walker." This guy was a knarly SOB. HE would go out on his sit on top kayak with a .457 and go up in the rivers. He would get his kayak and the pistol aligned and shoot the gators...AT NIGHT. then get in water and heft the gator over the bow and tie it down. Sometimes he would have two and the kayak was barely floating. Even though illegal everyone knew he knew where all the gators were.
Now to the point. The so called experts would come to him so that they could validate their classroom theories that the alligator was endangered. Patrick took them at night. So there he was with a bunch of ecotards and he shines a flashlight all around them and all there is are red dots looking back. thousands of them which were the gators eyes reflecting the light. Disproved that the gators were endangered.
Now to my last point. The environmentals are like all left wing ideologies. Find something then press control over people using it. Make crap up, don't do field work or anything empirical.
BTW alligator tastes like chicken but the tail tastes and has the texture of cod. Don't ask me how I know this.
One trick they use at F&W is to declare "subspecies." If you've got 400,000 or so desert tortoises crawling around and you're worried that the number sounds too high to scare congresscritters into saving them, all you need to do is pay a contractor to analyze the tortoises' DNA and declare there are actually three different "subspecies" and one of them only has about 30,000 or so left. Now you've got a better number to scare congresscritters with.
This is easy to do because there is no clear definition of what makes a subspecies and every living creature on Earth has slightly different DNA than every other living creature. Basically, if you WANT something to be a different "subspecies" you can easily make your case.
Over at the California border there's a little tiny fish called the Devil's Hole pupfish which is no different than millions of other pupfish around the world except in minute sections of its DNA. But there are only about a hundred Devil's Hole pupfish which makes them an endangered "species" so they've spent tens of millions of our dollars trying to save them, and preventing anybody from using their water, of which there are billions of pristine gallons sitting there below ground like a Christmas present from God - enough to turn Califorinia into a giant rose garden. I would say the Devil's Hole pupfish is a bigger scam than the desert tortoise and that's saying something.
Seem to recall that's the exact scam they use with salmon, and don't even make a pretense at a genetic difference. Some salmon go up the Able River to spawn, some go up Baker River, others go up Charlie River.
Yup. You got it. Exact same salmon, except THESE are "Able River Salmon," and so on. VERY easy to get dangerously low population numbers that way!
They're really happy this year in California. They closed salmon season due to the drought.

If memory serves, I believe all this endangered tortoise BS started years ago when it was used as an excuse to shut down the Barstow-to-Vegas desert race.
