But that same month, 85,000 workers left the workforce entirely to enroll in the Social Security Disability Insurance program, according to the SSA.” Of course, those 85K no longer count as “unemployed.” Damn fine wreckovery you got there, Barry.

There are and always will be shitheades who scam the system..It's prevelant in law enforcement and the fire service..When I was with the Highway Patrol years ago we had a husband and wife, she was CHP he was a deputy with a Sheriff's Department, both went out on "Lower Back Injuries" neither one could sit for more than a few hours according to their claim..The internal affairs folks at CHP caught them both riding in rodeos..On bucking horse...I guess that didn't affect their back huh..Then there was a rash of older guys who had "single chair rollovers" in the office with no witness..Injured and just old enough to retire so they get a disability retirement at 50 percent tax free because of their accident...There is a huge business in Kalifornia of private investigators following around the "injured" and video taping them repairing their roofs, water skiing, etc....I have seen more than a few cops retire with no apparent side affects to their life after the injury, and what sucks is the guys who get retired but don't want to go and they are really hurt, or had multiple heart attacks, etc...I lost a lot of my hearing from years of gunfire, sirens, radio traffic and all the assorted noises we get on the job..I fixed it by buying a couple hearing aids, altho I was qualified for a disability..I went out on a regular retirement...Screw it, the day I need someone else to take care of me, is the day I end up in a nursing home....and I hope thats a few decades down the road...:)

I wonder how many of those on disability are those men and women who served in Iraq and Afghanistan who had their arms and legs blown off or amputated..or just came back after too many tours of duty in a state of total mental collapse.

Soldiers injured in combat do not have to apply for disability payments BARBBF, they get their hard earded rewards through the Veterans Administration and are not part of the disability numbers. Being a veteran myself that is one part of my taxs I don't mind paying. These kids have earned whatever we can give them in the way of health care or anything else they need.
Good point Whiskey. You're correct of course, none of those Veterans are counted in the SS Disability roles, because they don't collect from there.
One of the things that the Federal Government has to do is take care of it's wounded warriors. Most of the rest of what they do is unconstitutional.
What a bunch of crap. I have two bad disks in my back, both from earlier injuries but now getting worse because of age. Broke both elbows when I was in the service, both knees have been operated on, I have a steel plate in one ankle to keep my foot from flopping over when I sit down, not to mention the occational finger or rib broke while doing something.
And, I have never, ever, drawn a gooberment check of any kind. No disability, no workmans comp., no unemployment, nothing. When hurt at work the company took care of everything so I would not sue their ass off and as soon as I was able I went back to work. Most times, before some dipwad doctor said I was supposed to because things felt good enough to me.
Disabled my ass. I work in the heavy construction industry and know first hand what bad injuries are, it is part of the job if you are stupid and I have been over the years. I qualify for partial disability from my time in the service, I'll never see it because I don't need it. I could have sued a couple of former employers for big time bucks but why? They took care of my family when I was down and I went back to work as soon as I was able. Things worked out just fine without a lot of lawyer bullshit.
That is part of the problem we have in this country. Too many crybaby sissies and too few working men and women who have to pay for the crybabies "disability" problem.

Thanks for you kind words. I've grew up in a working family, worked hard all my life, taught my children the rewards earning a living can give. It isn't about the material things you can buy, homes, cars and throw away toys, it's about coming home tired with a paycheck in your pocket and knowing you did a good job.

Our office secretary had major back surgery recently, and sometimes it caused her great pain just to sit for too long or to walk the short distance down the hall to the bathroom. Still, she refused to go on disability, even though she easily would have qualified. She wanted to keep working. Unfortunately, we're seeing less and less of her kind of attitude.
Restless tell her to go to "Sitting Clinic". They can do pressure mapping to see what best cushion she needs to take the wait off of her spine.
Bet no one told her about those clinincs.

If they are unable to work, they are unable to eat. There are people who need help and should have it. There are others gaming the system and they need to go straight to jail, do not pass go and do not collect 200.00 dollars.

Heck, I can't even get a handicapped parking spot when I'm driving my 89 father in law around! It's out of control abused around these parts. I'd imagine most of these folks draw some disability benefits too.
Try getting a handicapped spot in FLorida! We have my 80 year old father in law living with us, and he can't drive and has a disabled card that hangs from the mirror. It amazes me how many people have these parking permits that really don't need them, but that aside, Florida is the "elephant graveyard" of the US. I still parked in the south 40, because that's where I've always parked. About the only time I used it was for metered parking, because with the placard, you don't have to pay, and there's no time limit.
I got off the employee shuttle at the airport a while back. On the bus were 4 of the dayshift sky caps. These guys pull down in excess of 50K a year in unreported cash tips throwing and hauling luggage. Three of these guys got off the bus and walked right to the handicap parking and got in their Caddys/Lexus. I really wanted to scream!!!!
Those are union jobs. Being handicapped doesn't keep them from getting paid.

I truly qualify for disability, with all the injuries I've had over the years, and now they're coming back to haunt me. But if I took my disability retirement, plus disability payments from SS, I wouldn't be allowed to do what I love any more. Yes, it hurts to rock my horses. But I can't stop. I'm addicted to playing with the people.
I know what you mean Flash. I have so many injuries from over the years that I can't do any actual manual labor for over 5 hours a day without extreme pain. I am a career for an orthopedist.
Bad ankle, bad knees, bad back (2 discs in the lower back, scoliosis, 2 collapsed discs in my neck, stenosis in my lower spine and neck), carpal tunnel in both hands, tendonitis in both elbows, bursitis in both shoulders, arthiritis in both hands and my neck.
I take anti-inflammatories for neck pain and gabapentin for the nerve problems the stenosis in my back is causing.
The stenosis in my lower back will eventually put me in a wheelchair, and the stenosis in my neck will eventually cause me to become a quadrapelegic.
I am eligible for SS disability and a med pension from the military, but haven't pursued either. I would much rather work. My wife keeps bugging me about getting the disability for the future, but I keep her at bay. It's hard for her to understand, but that's the way it is.

Not necissarily, Poppa. You can get some spinal injections to help with that. May take up to 3 injections in each the neck and low back for complete relief but hey, it's worth a shot. (no pun intended)

From what I hear, I'm one of the lucky ones. The only part of my body that I haven't seriously injured is my back. Unless you consider a broken neck to be a back injury. Skull fracture, both elbows, both hands, ribs, both knees, one ankle, numerous broken toes. Yes, I've had a lot of fun. But it all comes to a stop when you hear the crunch of bones breaking.
Like they say, "it's all fun and games until someone gets hurt".

I would give anything to undo some of the damage I've done to myself. Mainly because pain killers don't have any effect on me, not even a yawn.
Unfortunately, the most nefarious of my issues, the stenosis, isn't attributable to injuries, so I couldn't have stopped that.
