Do you want to know what propaganda looks like? The WaPo published this picture, purportedly of a power plant emitting black smoke. It’s really white smoke, condensing water vapor, photographed at a time of day when the setting sun makes it look ominous: “That power plant has state-of-the-art ‘scrubbers,’ which which cost over $400 million, and which remove 95% of the SO2 and nearly all of the particulate matter. Almost nothing visible is left except steam.”

The example is a blatant one but there is far "softer" propaganda out there that people simply miss. Carrying the narrative that establishes the premise of legitimacy of what the government is currently doing is a general example; specifically characterizing politicians who've climbed aboard the environmentalist bandwagon for the benefit of so-called green industries who have lined their pockets with the real green as actually being concerned with headlines like, "Senator X seeks to curb greenhouse gases with proposed bill" is a hypothetical case. Basically, just about any news story one sees is to some degree propaganda. The current campaign of making scattered instances of "gun violence" national news is more relevant example. The aim is quite obvious: create the perception that shootings have become epidemic and suggest that by banning guns that these incidents would go away.
The best defense against such onslaughts of misinformation is to limit the sources. A skilled propagandist might characterize my decision to cancel my cable and put my television in storage as an assault on the glazing industry which would be called upon to replace the windows I'd have thrown my TV through after viewing more examples of how stupid I'm presumed to be than I can possibly take in one sitting.
Every election cycle, we see the ads
"Joe Republican's company was FINED by the DEP for violations!"
This is said while we're staring at a picture of a large pipe with some ungodly horrible-looking green glop coming out into the river.
Of course, they don't happen to mention that the fine was for not properly filling out the 36 page application to lay some sod within 300' of a regulated creek.
It's an old story, and will be repeated again and again and again...

It annoys me to no end that these liars get away with this crap all the time. Anyone who know the difference between smoke and steam can tell that those a steam trails coming from those stacks. Steam and smoke look differents from each other when they're streaming from high stacks like these and this is definitely steam. Nice how the photoganda is labled as ' spewing emissions' by the journaliar that took the picture.
I saw a movie recently called "Nothing But The Truth" about a reporter who was jailed for refusing to reveal a source ala Judith Miller. The movie raised an interesting point, should the Imperial Federal Government be able to jail a reporter who protects a source? I am inclined to say no, reporters should not be jailed for reporting stories. The Feds have too damn much power already.
But then when I see this inanity from the Washington Post I want a law that says we can kick the ass of dimwitted reporters.
BTW, "Nothing But The Truth" was a pretty good movie. There's a real kicker in the last two minutes before the credits roll. It's would be a spoiler to say more than that.
