EEOC: High school diploma requirement might violate Americans with Disabilities Act

• I don't have a high school diploma, I got a GED when I was in boot camp years ago, and I never had a problem getting a job. I worked with a lot of college graduates over the years that were useless, they could not do the job they were hired to do.

  Point being, most employers could care less what kind of official "paper" you have your name on, all they care about is can you do the job or not? Diploma or no diploma, all employers are faced with the same problem when hiring a new person and all the fancy education, or lack of it, means nothing. No gooberment rules or regulations will ever change the fact and this "ruling" by the EEOC just proves how out of touch and stupid they really are. I bet every one of the EEOC nimrods has a college diploma too.

  • I HAVE a college degree. And I spent most of my life working with people who did the identical same job I did, but with a 2 year degree, or no degree at all. I paid a fortune (for that time, nothing like now) for what? I did n't get paid more, or promoted faster. Recently there have been a few jobs that required a degree. The stick about HS diplomas is the same. They do not, in themselves, guarantee a job, a better job, or a more prepared workforce.

    • As a hiring manager, one thing about a degree or a diploma depending on the job is that one who has the paper has demonstrated the ability to start and finish something. That is essential in a project oriented world.

• Another sterling example of the fed bureaucracies' idiocy involves typing tests. Typing tests WERE routine for clerical/typing jobs. But someone noticed that black people scored lousy. So the idiots decided that typing tests for typing jobs was "discrimination." The idiots outlawed the typing tests in favor of applicants "self-certifying." I.e., claiming any typing speed they chose, without proof or test. Really, every time you think the govt idiots have reached a pinnacle of stupidity, they surpass themselves.

• Jeanne Goldberg, a senior lawyer/adviser at the agency, said the issue would come up only when high school graduation standards are not related to a specific job.

  “This would never arise when the high school diploma is in fact necessary to do a job,” she said.

  Uh-huh. And what's Phase II? Demanding an employer "prove" minimal skills are necessary? Well WTF, a high school diploma is about as worthless as a Hawaiian birth certificate these days, so who really cares?

  • What I don't get is they are the ones insisting that to continue breathing after about age 25 you simply MUST have a college degree. Then they turn around and say a requiring a highschool diploma (or GED I am sure) is discriminatory?
