Elon Musk Defends His Companies’ Subsidies: Elon Musk has invested billions in developing technologies that there may or may not be an actual demand for. If there is a demand for it he will be sure to reap the benefits. If there is not a demand for it he will be sure to pass the cost onto us.

I think we can file him under 'Venture Cronyism.'
Of course he is going to defend his free goobermint money. No matter how stupid, or impractical the the crap he comes up with is, he is not about to let the gravy train go down the tracks without him.
I seriously hope we get a president who looks at "subsidies" like this and cuts them off completely, same thing for most foreign aid, the U.N. and grants for studying why fat lesbians ride motorcycles and all the other goofy shit. For once, let us live within our means....but with some of the dumber than dirt Rinos running that is a slim chance.
We have wasted billions on "green" energy projects, wind farms, solar generating plants, electric cars, battery manufacturers for those cars, solar panel plants, all of which would go out of business tomorrow if not for the taxpayer.
We would have been much better off if those billions had helped power companies build more gas fired power plants or even nuclear power plants, generating plants that could produce enough electricity to power entire states instead of covering states with wind and solar crap that can barely provide power to a small town.
I cannot begin to express how irritated I get when liberals start complaining about "subsidies" for oil companies. There are no such subsidies. In fact, oil companies get penalized with a 1% higher income tax rate simply for being oil companies, thanks to Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi controlling Congress in 2008: http://jpattitude.com/110923.php.
