Total junk science! The glass in the tubes stops 100% of the uv-a and around 85%to 95% of the uv-a. No matter what happens to the coating as long as the glass is intact no uv-c can be propagated....if the glass breaks the tube does not work. Twisty bulbs have lots of short falls, however this is junk science at it's worst.
An engineer friend of mine said the same thing. My beef with CFL is comprehensive but this meme just does not seem to hold up given we are under fluorescent lights all of the time.
I throw mine in the trash when they burn out. If they're dumb enough to force me to use them, then let them fish the things out of the landfill.
I thought about boxing my burned CFLs and sending them to the EPA with a note that said, you wanted me to use the damn things, you dispose of them.

The incandescent lightbulbs disappear from the shelves faster than they can stock them. I have ONE fixture with them, and only because it came with them.

CFL bulbs are the pits, I detest them and the idiotic government mandate passed by an ignorant Congress. Like other people on this thread I've been quietly buying incandescent light bulbs. Crurrently I have several hundred stored in a box. Various wattages, mainly 60, 100 and 3 way bulbs.
The road to Hell is paved with CFL light bulbs. This is a perfect example of a liberal "feel good" idea whose negative consequences were ignored or denigrated.
Yeah, good old George W. Bush lacked the balls to veto the CFL mandate.

When I recently moved back to Michigan I dsicovered that I get to listen to Fred Upton running for reelection, and the dumbass has more money than God apparently, so I get to listen to this RINO claim his primary opponent is a RINO 24/7. It's enough to make me barf. I don't care who is primary oppoent is, he has to be better than Fred Upton, who only turns into a conservative during a campaign.

Someone I know (not me! I swear! It's a "friend", really) just throws these stupid things out in the trash. I - I mean - SHE figures that if they are SO much better for the environment that the government mandates their use, then they should be fine in the landfill. SHE also refuses to recycle anything except cardboard, since the energy used to recycle is greater than the savings. Trees? They grow back, so I could care less about "wasting" paper. I have stockpiled many cases of old bulbs in my basement. Sounds weird, but I figure anything the government MAKES you buy is a bad idea. Still waiting for someone to prove my theory is wrong.
As have my husband and I. I think we'll be forced to light our way by candlelight soon.
I live full time in an RV. My built in lighting uses automotive taillight bulbs. I'm slowly switching them over to LED, mostly because I like the quality of the light better.

I use them a lot in photography. The light is very pleasing, and I don't have to make my white balance setting do back flips.

For that I would personally go with a good night vision device.

well, this particular skunk and i are kinda formin a relationship, one might say. I lit him up with a regular old dcell flash, or torch, as our cousins'd say, and from a distance, i found him, it was late twilight, and i was very interested to see what creature it was that looked kinda like a HUGE squirrel and a crippled cat. Anyway, it comes up the little decline from the creek i reckon, haunting dumpsters. i had enticed squirrels to my front yard, and i mean yard almost literally, anyway, after 2nd squirrel feast, SOMETHING ELSE had been at the goodie jar, and a second night, on the third night, *and i've recently had a screen storm door installed hooray!* i was going out, and this is the eve i'd spotted a skunk w/the torch, i went out to my bud's car for something, and before i set foot on my porch i saw the skunk, i'd just turned on my ccf porchlight, and he was dazed and backin away, and i was sprised and backin away, so fast i left my okabashi on the porch while i gathered my thots at my kithchen sink.
