I'm a combat veteran and I support her right to do something so stupid. But I also support the right of anyone to slap her upside the head and call her a stupid bitch.
And that is my complaint. To often, speech such as this is considered "protected" by the 1st ammendment, but when the comment is not PC, suddently you are the most evil and dispicable speck of wasted of life in the universe.

I am torn about this, really. It was disrespectful, but she is young, and I honestly believe that she did it to be funny. Not that it IS funny, but I could see how someone might think it was ironic. On the other hand, she is old enough to know that actions have consequences, and posting it on Facebook was beyond stupid.
I am proud of LIFE for taking this seriously and for doing the right thing. Maybe firing was harsh, but they sent a firm and solid message. I applaud them for that.

What people put up on FB can follow you into work -- and she won't be the only schlub from this generation of idiots that finds out that the first thing that new employers do when they hire someone is to have a quick look at their FB profile, see if they aren't maybe just bullshitting the interviewer. Only the pies, my turkey is pretty sucky I hear. Do 4, 1 for G-ma and 3 for the 'gathering' once a year. And the yeast I mentioned was for my magic pizza bread.
(if ub interested, it's kinda funny, I have this huge plastic thing w/ concentric circles on it that dominates my table the day before Thanksgiving. Covered with flour and an honest to goodness rolling pin, we make 'real' pie crusts. Not frozen.)
The reason it's funny is G-ma forgets she's the one who gave it to me and taught me how to cook. Loves my pie, and she's an old school 96. Why I only do it once a year.
Now the pizza bread is different (not that stale frozen half loaf of garlic bread w/ sauce and a pepperoni...) not exact but think homemade dough, all your pizza favs whatever they may be spread out and then this raw crust rolled up and baked. Then cut in slices off the roll like sausage. OK, I quit, couldn't help it.
I hate to admit it, but I don't have the time to make my own pizza dough. I use a frozen dough that I get in Wal Mart that is made in NJ. It is a very good dough.
Gotcha, but this is Thanksgiving, kinda my little family (pie) tradition. And the pizza bread is awesome, think all that stuff rolled up in a loaf... and baked in a loaf pan. And sliced about a half inch thick when done, looks like pizza cinnamon rolls. Can't wait.
That's a damned shame Flash. I remember quite a few unpleasant holidays also, but never let it get to me that bad. However, my thrill oer them has declined over the last few years, but I think it has more to do with my unpleasant home situation.

It's not built real heavy, and had to be modified to really hold the smoke and heat in, but I'm doing some good stuff with it. I'll probably have to replace it in five years or so, but hopefully I'll be in a position to buy something built of thicker steel.
Robert, with the fact of not having refrigerator, and just the two of us here, we decided to forego the entire holiday, since Kat likes to cook up a bunch of related goodies, and holidays are pretty much meaningless to me anyway. I grew up in a family where holidays were torture for me, and I never got over it.
drb, I got the Masterbilt electric smoker for Christmas last year. It has a digital thermostat, built in meat thermometer, and digital timer. I looooove it!

valid point though, there are people mentally incapable of serving, for any number of reasons.
mandatory 2 year service rankles for the simple reason that it's mandatory. I think, and I've said it before in these threads, that the idea proposed in Starship Troopers, that only veterans of the military can vote, is a better solution.

1 nobody should be required to do any of this,

Speaking as a Former Marine and Soldier and Defense Contractor serving a decade overseas, I know what serving is. I know what love for God, Country, Corps is and have shed blood myself in defense of the United States. Having said that:

People need other places that will accept persons of disabilities and conscious objectors as well as persons with lower intelligence or mental inefficiencies.
The leftists have to have somewhere to serve. Why not provide allow the American Muslims the option to serve the IRCF, at least they would be doing something. Many people sit around and bitch but never really put an honest thought into how in a diverse country a plan can really work. This is why the Republicans and myself lost the Presidential Election.

Yep. I feel the same way. Many of us on this board served and we did so because in one way or the other we were called to do so.
I think a volunteer armed forces is a better armed forces. Besides, we don't need another welfare program to keep slackers "employed" for two years out of their lives.
I understand what you are saying, but there was some really good things done with the draft. More people had to go, so there was less of the rotating assignments far beyond the 2 year enlistment. That became voluntary. It forced mama's boys to cut the apron strings and start thinking for themselves, it made it abundantly clear why freedom is never free and overall, more folks showed respect because most families had some skin in the game: Father, Brother, Son, nephew, cousin. Everyone knew someone personally who had served. For the classless, they learned manners, and respect for elders and leaders. They learned how to dress like a human being, and they learned SOME kind of skill. Yeah, I can see some real positives for everyone to serve 2 years as payment to live here.
then let them serve in govt. they could NOT be worse than what's in there now, AND they'd gain practical knowledge of what it takes to keep a country afloat while being protected who are called to protect. AND keep these incompetents as well as the ignorant OUT of the Armed Forces where they'll have to be forced with visiting death first hand, upon the enemy. I think this would also reduce the number of career pols, which is never a good thing, humans being what they are.
Got these off the NGO LIST OF RELIEF ORGANIZATIONS list so I just may know a little more about it than you do. I used that list so whiners couldn't say that all people are not able to serve when in fact all people can serve in some manner. I don't like the UN either but this is the list and the US is paying for it so it may as well get used!
