Fairfax County officials are demanding a tree house built by a father for his two sons be torn down because it is located in the front yard and was constructed without a permit. Maybe dad should just tell the county it is a new-fangled solar collector built with stimulus money. Does anyone else get the feeling this country is loaded with two-bit piss-ant bureaucrats that have too much time on their hands?

Well be fair, that's not a "dozen boards knocked together" kids' treehouse. That *is* a pretty major piece of development on the property. Sh1t, that's barely even in the tree.
You'd think these bureaucrats have nothing better to do then to go after some kids (and their parents) and their tree houses. These same people are saying they'll have to stop prosecuting domestic violence cases because they just don't have the resources... yet they have the resources to do this?
Priorities, you know. This is easy pickins. Domestic cases actually require work.
This is yet another interesting way for the government to "earn" revenue. Wow... one day we will have a social worker coming into our homes just to make sure that everything IN the house is according to government regulation and you have nothing to do with government OTHER than just owning a house and paying taxes (that is to say you are not a foster parent and so on). But hey stop paying taxes the government will ALSO be there to make sure you pay them what they are owed. We as people will never win if we continue to allow the government to rape us.
That sounds about right. Fairfax County Supervisory board is totally out of control.
What you guys are forgetting, is what the permit process is all about. The government OWNS your property, and they want to control and keep track of any modifications made to THEIR property. IF they allowed a treehouse to be built, it would only be by permit, so that they don't forget to add the value of the treehouse to the value of THEIR property when it comes time to calculate the rent. (Property taxes)
And yes, they will charge you money for the official permission to add to the value of THEIR property.

He spent $1900 to the COUNTY! Wow. Bribes are getting more and more expensive. Nice looking treehouse too. I'd be willing to Green Certify it for him.

Yes.
My friends and I built several treehouses when we were kids. We never had a problem with city officials and back then (before the socialists came along), we got some good comments on our innovations. But, the cities have dreamed up any way possible to squeeze every dollar they can out of everybodies wallets. A permit for this, a permit for that to keep OSHA afloat. I think the socialist have people that sit on their duffs all day long dreaming up regulations. "O"s czars do it.
