  • With the drop in corn yields this year I am hoping they will quit using it for HFCS and animal feed to animals that need hay or grass.

• Actually, that comment was in response to another comment thread and the person I was responding to was making a racially charged claim against the president, so it was an appropriate response. It amazes me that people worry so much about tax dollars that go to help poor or less fortunate people, but have no idea (and never complain about) all the millions we give to welfare recipients like EXXON (who's profits are in the billions with a B). We spend more on "wealth"-care than we do on all social programs for the poor with the exception of Medicade for the elderly and disabled. Just do an internet search for "Corporate welfare" and you will get the facts.

  • BTW, your faux outrage over Exxon is pretty funny. They get the same R&D tax credits that any other firm that advances technology. Surely, you aren't suggesting that one company receive a credit and another should not? I don't think any company should receive any credits and the federal government should simply lower the corporate tax rate. Revenue neutral and no games.

    • It isn't "faux" outrage. It is a statement and wasn't even meant to address just Exxon. The money our government gives to wealthy corporations that don't need it is as substantial as the money we give to help the needy. That was my point. But I agree with you that they should just drop all the credits, make the playing field fair for all companies - not just those that lobby for special favors - and lower the tax rate for any company/business that keeps jobs here in America.

      • When you say the money that the government gives to companies, what do you actuall mean? I just addressed the one company YOU cited. What does it have to do with a 114% increase in the cost of food stamps when usage is far less than that. Why the false equivalency? I know, no cogent argument.

This is for two reasons. The first is that it simply makes sense and the second is it makes you seem like an alt for Olivia.

• Ann Romney wanted to convince us that she understands the troubles of the average American. She said "she knew what it was like to struggle, that she knew what it was like to be one of us". The comment by Juan Williams is not that she doesn't work, because raising a family -of course - is work. But understanding people that have to choose between their house payment and a nutritious meal for their family is something Ann Romney will never understand. The second point, for all you making a big to-do about him being a "liberal". Juan Williams was hired by FOX News because he makes liberals look bad, just like all so-called liberals that are guests on FOX News a majority of the time. They don't truly represent liberal values, they don't know how to represent or argue liberal values, and they make all liberals look like race-baiting bafoons. THAT IS WHY FOX NEWS HIRED THEM. And another thing, why all the attacks against Michelle Obama? What does she have to do with Juan Williams comment? Michelle Obama has worked and she is very involved in not only helping her husband's campaign, but (among other things) supporting veterans and encouraging companies to hire veterans. Veterans have the lowest unemployment under Obama than in the past few decades. I have never heard her speak of others - even the ones that disagree with Obama's policies - in a mean-spirited way. And many of the comments (I'm not saying all) about her are clearly racist - they aren't even the subtle slurs that the politically correct try to hide behind. Newsflash...making Obama out to be the "food stamp" president is a racially motivated slur - even though just as many white people are on food stamps as blacks or mexicans. The reason more people are on food stamps right now is because we are IN A RECESSION with high unemployment. The economy is recovering from the 8 year disaster that was the BUSH presidency, but many of his policies are still in place (The Bush Tax Cuts, his tax payer funded welfare program to the Drug Companies, deregulation of the financial industry) AND Republicans have blocked several jobs bills that would have brought unemployment down. They care more about obstructing the president than helping the American People. The truth is this country was in a MESS after 8 years of Bush policies and Obama can't fix it overnight with a "party of no" blocking everything he tries to do. Another thing, just because you search around and find one so-called liberal that says something stupid, doesn't mean that they represent liberals. There are a lot of nutcases out there - from both parties (and even on this comment thread).

    Do you have ANY idea how hypocritical your statement is? You suggest that a conservative called him the "foodstamp president", but that comment has nothing to do with race. The comment was about FOOD STAMPS. YOU then take the comment, call it racist and helpfully point out, to the person who didn't say a word about race, how they are wrong, because whites and mexicans (although we prefer the term Hispanics) are on food stamps too.

    • Actually 36% of SNAP recipients are white. The highest percentage of any demo.

As for Juan Williams, I find most liberals are of like mind despite perhaps being more intelligent than he. In other words, Williams is pretty typical of the left. Tell me where I'm wrong. What of his worldview do you disagree?

    • I completely understand Ann Romney's position. I was in a similar situation myself when I was younger. My husband and I were determined to make it on our own, with as little help from family as we could. We lived in a place that had mice and no insulation and pipes that froze in the winter. We had furniture that we bought at Goodwill or auctions, and ate a lot of oatmeal and tuna. Why? Because we didn't expect our parents to take care of us once we were old enough to live apart from them. We were TAUGHT to stand on our own, even though we were both from wealthy homes.

      We bought a cheap house when we could, after scrimping and saving, and had a baby five years later, when we could afford it. And 5 years after that we traded up to a really nice house in a really nice neighborhood. We did it on our own, without handouts from our parents.

      And yet, after all of that, I met a woman who only saw the big house and the heated pool, and was jealous and spiteful. She acted as though I had been handed everything, and that somehow that made it fair game for her to steal from me.

      Ann and Mitt Romney may have had wealthy parents, but that does not mean they didn't struggle. Maybe they, like my husband and I, had the security of knowing that in a REAL emergency, we had people that could offer a safety net, but I can tell you - unless my kid was in trouble I would NEVER have asked my parents for help. That would have been the most humiliating thing in the world to me!

      • Plus Mormons are required to do a 2 year mission trip in their late teens or early 20's. THey go all over the world, and THEY PAY FOR IT. THe church does not give them a dime. And after 2 years of being separated from Mommy and Daddy, and having to fend for themselves, work in the crappiest positions on the planet to reach the people they are trying to mission to, they come home with a much different attitude than you average living at home occupooper. No matter income, being a wife and m\MomIS a struggle in many ways. Rich people get rich in part because they don't spend every dime they have!

• What is the DEAL with this guy? Even if she IS fortunate enough to have a husband making enough to allow her to be a stay at home wife and mother, that is a 24/7 job. It involves conflict resolution, taxi service, laundress, chef, "chief cook and bottle washer." She is expected to look media ready at a moments notice and her house has to be spotless just in case someone drops by. Granted, money makes that easier, but it doesn't remove the stress, the exhaustion, and the frustration that goes along with the job. Novacation, no sick days. Just work, all the time, everyday. Of course her medical probelms being factored in, increases the issues she must have felt. This guy needs to put a sock in his mouth.

  • yes, my wife doesn't have to work (but has on occasion taken PT jobs).. if I ever suggested she didn't work a day in her life, a well-crafted murder would be among my fates

• Maybe Juan should think about calling some ones wife a corporate wife. Anne Romney is far from that and his bigoted ass knows this. He is so biased and racist, he would call even the Virgin Mary a corporate wife if she had been married to a republican running for president. He, along with the rest of the minorities in this country can not and or will not remove the blinders long enough to see its their democrat friends who have the corporate wives and the bimbo girl friends. Teresa Heniz-Kerry and Monica Lewinsky are just two that come to mind.

• It is so funny to me that Juan Williams attempts to STILL carry the water for those of the liberal persuasion even AFTER they kicked his ass to the curb. In his appearances on "The Five" I am getting the sense that FoxNews should kick his ass even further - out of their parking lot - and then allow him to get a new job - parking Chris Matthew's car.

• I loved Megan Kelly's responses. The rest of the panel's reactions were pretty funny, too.
