France, Germany, the UK, and Obama decide Syria needs a serious response. Which means Obama will have the U.S. Navy fire off two or three hundred million dollars worth of cruise missiles while our allies stand around and look tough.

  • Shoot, I can't stop looking at the picture and thinking there's nothing more beautiful in the world than a man-of-war with it's flag flying. I suspect the flag in this case is flying in wind generated by the ship's speed. Can you imagine sending a modern destroyer back in time into the Napoleonic Wars? The British Navy would spend a few moments wondering and admiring, then they would adjust their sails, clear for action, and engage - there was never any backup in the British Navy even when the odds were against them.

    Sorry, just had to get that out. I like boats.

        All kidding aside, some interesting work this company is involved in. Sure, they're plundering shipwrecks, but they seem to have respect for the human remains that they encounter. Discovery or Nat Geo has some shows on the recovery effort that is really worth finding and watching. Love the history aspect of all of it too.
        I work with a guy who bought in with them and the Mel Fisher group. He will never make money on the investment in the traditional sense, but he gets to dive and work the Atocha (yes, they're still recovering artifacts and emeralds) a few times a year. They divy up the years find with investors. It was pretty cool to see and handle his share of emeralds and pieces of eight! He invited me to go last year, but prior commitments prevented me from doing so. I hope he asks again because if I can make it, I'll sure as heck go. Ooops, got sidetracked...

        • I wonder why a ship of that size had a 12-pounder aboard. Seems too small even for the upper deck. Bow or stern cannon? No, wait, a ship that big would be considered a ship of the line so it would NEVER run away so it wouldn't need anything pointed backward. Beats me. Must have been a bow chaser. British ships of the line spent a lot of time chasing shit they couldn't catch so a bow chaser would at least let them work off some of their frustration.

          • Have you checked anywhere, cia site or Jane's, what kind of navy & air force does Syria have?

          • That site says Syria has 695 aircraft but I don't see where it gets specific about what they are. They're 19th in the ranking, just above Israel, but something tells me Israel has better aircraft with better maintenance and training. Historically, the reason why the U.S. Air Force has commanded the air is because of maintenance and training. Many countries spend their wad on the aircraft then can't afford to use them, so when war breaks out the pilots are trying to learn on the job.

          • I remember something about Syria's air defense (ground & air based radar and c&c, missiles) being pretty outdated. Could be wrong.

          • I'm pretty sure it's all older Soviet Union era stuff. Putin is probably the only thing keeping the UN (US) from reducing the Syrian military to rubble.

          • Since he and the State Department screwed up since the beginning of the civil war, now we actually have a national security interest as al Qaeda with chemical weapons is a huge threat to the West and Israel.

          • Sounds to me like we're getting ready to dip our toes into the turbid water of yet another congressionally unsanctioned war. Quagmire just can't stop shitting in other peoples yards!

  • I am kind of wondering where all of the real military leadership is, because this current crop of boot licking lap dogs are just empty suit commies with nothing better to do than boss privates and lieutenants around.

Unfortunately that statement is right on the money, and when they retaliate, that we be here and we can stand in more lines and hire more worthless fu*ks on the gubbermint payroll to stand around and harass granny and old white guys.

    • Did you happen to notice what happened in Libya? The UK and France were talking tough, but the UK had about six cruise missiles and France couldn't provide one. So all those cruise missiles they were firing were coming out of yours and my pocket while Obama politely let NATO take the lead and grab the credit so he could say, "Hey, we aren't at war with anybody, NATO is doing this, so I don't need congressional approval." Each one of those things costs between $1 million and $1.5 million and Obama uses them like they're 4th of July bottle rockets - close to 200 of them were fired into Libya, all so we could watch our ambassador raped and killed in the streets afterward.

      Military experts say the FIRST DAY of NATO's intervention in Libya cost us $100 million. The FIRST DAY.

    • money better spent in building a highway specifically for barry (the kenyan) et al to become bumps upon, within (not sure what word is proper here, but i reckon you're smart enuf to take my meaning, your navyness notwithstanding.
