Funniest line of the entire Weinergate episode: He should resign “to preserve his own dignity”

A lot of stupid things – no, a lot of really stupid things – have been said about Anthony Weiner and Weinergate in the last week, but we think we’ve run across what may be the dumbest comment of them all.

It’s brought to you courtesy of the nimrods at CNN:

Pointing fingers of blame everywhere except where they belong

Sen. Mark Pryor of Arkansas and Reps. Allyson Schwartz of Pennsylvania, Michael Michaud of Maine, Mike Ross of Arkansas and Niki Tsongas of Massachusetts joined a growing chorus of Democratic voices that have called for Weiner, D-New York, to step down over sexually tinged online communications with several women that he then lied about.

A Democratic legislator familiar with discussions with and about Weiner told CNN that Weiner’s colleagues are telling him he should resign “to preserve his own dignity.”

“To preserve his own dignity”? Hah! That’s like saying Weiner’s porn star should resign to preserve her virginity.

This guy had no dignity before Weinergate and he certainly has none now.

  • Weiner says that his wife, Huma Abedin, does not want him to resign. I certainly believe that. She is all about having access to, and influence over, powerful people. If Weiner is no longer powerful, she'll dump him in a New York minute.

    • Ahh, what people do for love or money! He has no love, even for himself and soon, I think, he'll be cash strapped as well!

  • He ever had dignity? If he did it must have a been a long time ago. He cannot preserve what has been gone for what I surmise to be years and years. What he should do is resign in order to save his wife (and child) any further embarrassment. He is selfish and arrogant and he is hoping that it will die out and people will move on to something else. I agree with someone that the people that vote for him also have no dignity if they vote for him again.

  • You know, doesn't he remind you of Pee-Wee Herman? And to think about the lack of respect for Congress he must have, to have the gall to take photos of himself in the congressional gym in his boxers. I"d bet if he finally gets tossed out of congress, he will get a TV show on PBS. Probably called "Pop Goes the Weasel"...

  • News reports a couple of days ago had him replying as follows when asked if he was going to resign: "No. I'm going to stick it out." Isn't that what got him into trouble in the first place????

  • Weiner's last chance to preserve his dignity was lost when he tweeted graphic pictures of his crotch to young women. It was all downhill when he hit the "send" button. How can a high profile Congressman, a man who aspires to be mayor of New York City, "preserve his dignity" when his spambotted penis is all over the internet?

P.S. The voters in his district, at least the majority that appears to stand behind him, have also lost their dignity. They are, ineffect, enabling a predator who has trolled the internet for women and then shamelessly lied about it.

    • When Weiner runs for mayor of NYC someday, he'll campaign as "the only candidate capable of erecting the new trade tower."

  • "That’s like saying Weiner’s porn star should resign to preserve her virginity."

Honestly, that is the best line of 2011 so far.

    • Whatever reason is used, her cessation will be a relief for the thumbs-downers and their mouse button. Her objectivity? That's rich.
