That's just awful. I heard that in schoolbooks in India they still call Hitler as a great man, though, so there is this kind of backwards education in any country, I'm afraid.
They seem to enjoy picking at their own scabs, so they will not heal.
People who owned slaves are all dead. So now the race baiters have determined that keeping the memory alive will keep white people feeling guilty for something that was done well over a century ago, by people whom none of us have ever met.
Sadly, no one on the left ever thinks about the ideology that has saturated the progressive left. This is the thinking that Olivia displays every time she makes a lame charge of racism, because she has no other argument to make.

Keep the black man down by telling them how they cannot make it in America. Keep the black man down by telling them that only the Democrats have blacks' best interests at heart. Keep him down with unemployment extensions, food stamps, and other programs that have done nothing elevate a person to self-sufficiency. Take programs that were intended to be temporary, helping to get people back on their feet after losing a job due to no fault of their own, and make them a lifestyle.
With this kind of thinking, it's easy to see why blacks have internalized the faulty notion that they have no chance here in America.
Here's my word question: The First Lady wears $600 Prada shoes to KFC to buy a bucket of Fried Chicken. If she need 8 security personnel to escort her, and they cost $150/hr each, How much does it cost the taxpayers to pay for her security entourage for the 1/2hour trip???

Those of you who know me understand I'm not trying to pass these items as all knowing or truth by any other name. There is an abundant supply of information to form any argument from any side one wishes which we all know to be true, except oblovia. She don't know a thing about truth. The Emancipation Proclamation was what finally put slavery on the map for the civil war. The original problem was states rights vs Federal government. One of the main issues was the ability to have slaves, which drove the southern economy. Lincoln was not an abolitionist per se, but he did feel that if one worked, one should enjoy the benefit of that work, not have it taken by someone else.

THAT is one if my reasons for despising Obama. As an ardent socialist, he simply does not understand this simple concept. That is why he is fine with nationalized medicine, which forces doctors to basically give away their labor, and an ever growing public sector union population. All of us become slaves to the state and its employees for the collective "good", which for him and his fellow travelers is justice.
The whole ideology of "collective good" is idiotic, and is the factual basis for communism. Anyone that has any concept of history, or reality, knows that communism is a dismal failure, hurting the ones most it is said to help.

That's because the majority in the North WEREN'T antislavery. The abolistionists were few but loud. The North needed slave labor to provide the raw materials for their manufacturing centers, and so were accepting of slavery. And many immigrants feared the competition for jobs would be worse if the slaves were freed and entered the job market. The idea that the North was predominately antislavery is a false one.

Rose, please check out this link. Slavery was a fact of life in the northern colonies but after the colonial era it died out quickly. One reason, it made no economic sense to maintain slaves during the winter months when no agriculture was done. There is a chart in the link that illustrates just how limited slavery was in the North. The industrial revolution required skilled labor and the various states banned the practice during the late 18th or early 19th century.

I am not talking about the ownership of slaves in the North. I am talking about many in the North not having a problem with the SOUTH having slaves, as that way of life made for a constant supply of material, predominately cotton, for Northern Manufacturers. In fact, the practice of huge plantations and slave labor was fading until Eli Whitney developed the cotton gin. Then it became profitable to grow and process the cotton to send North and to other countries. When all the ginning was done by hand, they weren't making much money at it.
The northern textile mill owners may have not opposed slavery, I don't know. Given the fact that the Underground Railroad ran north and slavery was illegal early on, the trade was not widely condoned and obviously it helped lead to the division of the country into two parts.
So true. Certainly there was more support for freed slaves in the North, where the practice had been banned. Even the Underground railroad ran well into the North, to help ensure the slaves would not be returned to their owners.
