Low income housing in Marin County could be a "win/win" for everybody involved. The low income people get to live in a very upscale neighborhood (good schools, four star restaurants) while the rich liberals in Marin have a cheap source of labor (gardners, pool boys, maids) nearby.
Without the usual expense of a public transportation system to get the minimum wage earners to work.

Actually if the person is intimidated, threatened, attacked physically or verbally because of race, gender, sexual preference, religious belief (etc etc) ALL are consider hate crimes. The Victim can report the crime as a hate crime. And as I posted for you on a previous thread, while blacks report more "hate crime" whites and Hispanics are more often targeted. God what a tedious little twit. Anyway, completely agree, as long as he is breaking no existing law, Lucas should have the right to do just about anything he likes with his own property. Thing is, property law can be pretty obscure, courts have routinely held over the years that a property owner can indeed be enjoined (before the fact) or liable for damages (after the fact) for compromising his neighbour's enjoyment of their own property. Search up a concept called "ancient lights," if you want some WTF fun.
Or if you want some real fun, this was just about everybody's favorite case, I think it was Sun City Development, in Arizona. The developer starts building a huge community virtually next door to a slaughterhouse or meat packing plant. After about 5 years, he brings suit that the slaughterhouse is a public nuisance because he's got about 10 000 people in Sun City getting stunk up from the operations there. Well the judge agreed that you can't make 10 000 people live next door to a slaughterhouse, and agreed it had to move. OK now here's the "You lose if you win" bit: The slaughterhouse had to move, but the Sun City developer had to pay for it! See folks? Sometimes the systemworks!

This case was all over the web, the news, the print media and this site. What do you mean "why didn't your report it?" The victim is mentally ill (which the police did not know) and watching the tape, for someone who could not breathe, he sure was making a lot of noise. The cops that beat him are animals and deserve to go to jail. But if you were shown this video cold, without any accompianing information your would not the victim repeatedly argued with the cops, refused to comply with instructions until forced to do so, contnued to fight the cops even on the ground. At one point one of the cops decides he is "pm something." Police have been injured and killed in the line of duty in situations like this, so while I don't agree with their actions, I can to a point understand why they were adting in that manner. Also note the guy who posted the video has been arrested a number of times and is currently under indictment for filming police action. Seems he makes a career of finding the worst examples of cops around the nation, and psoting them as though the represent all police officers.

Rose, I happen to know a lot about Carlos Miller, I follow his situation closely. He's not the only one who has been arrested, beat up, had his storage media confiscated illegally, because he caught on tape what the police were doing.
If the police are doing something that they don't want the world to know about, they're not doing their job right. There is nothing illegal about videotaping police at work, yet as the people have more and more access to video recording equipment, (cell phones, etc.), many police departments are starting to harass anyone who stands back out of the way and tapes them.
How about they just do their jobs well enough to be proud of the tapes?
Yes, it was nonsense when Thomas was repeatedly shouting that he couldn't breathe. He could breathe just fine, or he wouldn't have been able to yell about it over and over. But if you look at him, and the first two officers, you have to wonder if there's really any reason for Thomas to end up looking like he did in the picture at the end of the page, or if two competent officers could have taken him into custody without killing him. I believe Ramos stated his intentions well before the altercation began, then followed through with it.
I'll say it again, most cops do their jobs well. The ones who don't should be weeded out, the ones who kill people for no reason should be in prison with the rest of the murderers.

I absolutely agree with you, and so stated in my original post and with my subsequent post above. But to assume all cops are going to beat the hell out of you for no reason is facetious. Generally, if you follow instructions, don't fight and don't give them a reason, you don't get hit. In this kids case, he is mentally ill, and probably really couldn't comply as the cops were telling him. And at the risk of Olivia thundering in here and calling me a racist, while this occurs in ALL races, I know from incidents in San Antonio that many hispanic males, raised on Machismo, will fight first and negotiate later. The cop ws morbidly obese, and shouldn't even have been on the force. Maybe he felt he wasn't gettingenough "respect" from this snotty white kid. He stillhad no reason to beat him to a pulp, but I expect he thought as a cop, he could prove his "manliness" and gt away with it. I'll just bet he was as stunned as anyone that the kid died and his ass was in a crack.

This has nothing to do with "poor" people but retribution for the nimby attitude of the Marin HOA that shutdown Lucas's studio project claiming they believe HIS property is actually THEIR backyard. Only a democrat could think that way and Marin is Pelosi's backyard as well. The good people of Marin County have always advocated for housing for the poor in everybody's county but their own. When developers attempt to build low income housing there it is always shutdown or the good people of Marin will buy land for housing for the poor in other jurisdictions where the poor would be more welcome thereby not detracting from the home values of their fair cities and meeting quotas set buy local jurisdictions. Really all that is beside the point, if you can't afford to live there, you can't live there. Why should somebody pay for the POOR to live in Monterrey? They didn't make the decisions that make a life that afforded them that place. It isn't a right, YOU EARN IT!! What a concept....

What happened is that Lucas wanted to put a film studio there that would employ about 750. The stuffed shirt progressive/liberal neighbors (Marin County is Liberal Town) had a big fit and tried to block this and threatened lawsuits. Lucas has already spent millions on this and was going to spend millions more restoring the creek that runs though the property back to what is was in the old days. I can guarantee you it wouldn't have been an eyesore.
After continued resistance and facing years more of litigation from the NIMBY (not in my backyard) liberal/progressive neighbors he said screw it, it's going to be low income housing.
This is about is the reaction of the so-called liberal/progressive neighbors. Most who are now begging Lucas to build his film studio there because they're all scared shitless that half of the hood in Oakland is going to be their new neighbors.
This shows what a bunch of flaming hypocrites they are, not to mention prejudiced. It has zero to do with mocking people in need of low income housing.
George has successfully used them against themselves. The only graceful solution at this point would have been to welcome the low income housing with open arms, which didn't happen.

IF Lucas is putting his own land, his own money, and all else up for this project I think he should be able to do it. It just could be that Lucas using his own money and not other peoples' might be able to make low income housing work. I doubt it but we all know that government low income housing has never worked.
I would just put a lot of trailers in the desert for the homeless and low income. Let them run their own little society and sweep through with a meat wagon when they all died.
