Two words: Walter Deming. Detroit had its chance and it let him go to Japan. If you don't know who he is, I urge you to look him up. He changed the manufacturing world almost as profoundly as Bill Gates changed data processing.

Stupid sounding comment but I don't think intentionally subversive. In point of fact, this is exactly what most of us have known about Detroit since the '70s. Japanese innovation made auto production incredibly efficient. I recall an article, think it was Smithsonian, comparing the standard Detroit model for swapping stamp molds, which shape sheet metal into hoods or doors or whatever. It would take half a shift crew 2 or 3 hours to swap one out.
At Toyota, one man could do the same thing by himself in half an hour.
No, don't think he was being subversive or that he is wrong to say that GM may still need reforms. It's just an ironic way to put it, comparing a company which has been seen as an example of Chinese-style crony capitalism to the Chinese Communist Party of the Mao era. Maybe a bit of a Freudian slip also - down deep, does he see GM as something more akin to a totalitarian political organization than a capitalistic business concern?
$1.2 billion in profit? Isn't the 'P' word bad?
Why isn't Dear Leader Lord 0bama out stumping to make GovMtr keep those workers? This is not the time for profit. What is different about the whole GovMtr deal? I also hear that new hires don't get nearly the package the older 'brother' do, why would they do this?
I would put a hunski down that it is because Dear Leader Lord 0bama gave a huge chunk of bond holder money to the UAW and they now have a large percentage of the chairs in the boardroom.
Don't be fooled, if there are really any profits, they get them. But any losses, & so far, it's all been losses, are socialized. They have not paid back their bailout yet, because they have been paying it off with a gov't created escrow account. Sort of like paying off your Visa with your MasterCard. Your Visa is paid off, but you still owe MasterCard, except in this case, it's with the house's money. What wil happen is that some of it will be paid back, Obama will call it even, & presto, they are paid back. GM will be worthless until it's privatized again, but my guess is that may never happen.
