Time to bring back the old jingle (Again)..."You will die today, in your Chevrolet"........Government motors, Epic fail on a grand scale.
Yeah, I agree the Volt is a worthless car, but this problem seems more like a stupid owner issue than a stupid car issue. If you leave your car running even though it's giving you a warning sound as you walk away to tell you it's still running... well, you're not overly bright.
But it's an interesting problem, one of many my 96-year-old father mentioned a few years ago. Electric cars (and steam cars) have a long history. There were electric cars and steam cars way back in the 1920s and Dad said they were both dangerous as hell for pedestrians because you couldn't hear them coming. I wonder how many people have thought of that? As a frequent walker, I've had to retrain myself not to cut across streets based on what I hear, because these damn electric cars are everywhere now. And I'm pretty sure Dad told me a story about a buddy who forgot to turn his car off and something bad happened, which must mean it was either steam or electric.
Interestingly, the first car I ever owned was a 1950 Ford (no model name) with a flathead V8 that was so quiet it had similar issues. Nobody could ever hear it coming. And one day in college I was shoveling snow trying to get the damn thing unstuck in the fraternity parking lot when a couple guys came to help me. Suddenly a guy at the back of the car said, "Hey, did you guys know the engine is running?" None of the other guys realized it was running because it was so quiet. "That's not the biggest surprise," he said. "It's in gear, too!" The damn thing was so quiet and had such phenomenally bad traction, I'd accidentally left it running and in forward, and it was soundlessly going nowhere.
This car was supposed to be named "Dolt".
Uhmm, leave it alone and we might thin out some of the shallow end gene pool types...
Oh, quit complaining - this one doesn't even have a body count yet(two injured)so by BO standards it's not even a minor scandal. In fact, given the politics of many of those who purchase electric cars, GM may be helping us out by culling the herd.
Still, that's pretty odd for what is advertised as a "Zero Emissions Vehicle".
