Reviews of the Facebook competitor have been harsh. For example, Business Insider said, “There’s almost nothing original with Google+.”
But that’s not true. When you sign up for the new Google+, you get the attached question on gender.
Apparently, the geniuses at Google have developed a new sex, because in addition to being offered the same old boring choices of “Male” and “Female,” they now offer you the option to select “Other”.
Our best guess? They expect Richard Simmons to sign up.

I'm thinkin' that "other" is for the Cyborg Bots that inhabit the administration.
Your interpretation of the grammar from the editorial is incorrect. Stating that "There is almost nothing original", is not the same as stating, "There is nothing original". The editorial properly qualified their statement by saying "almost", leaving a small window of opportunity for some minor trivial things to be different.
Like what you point out in the rest of your article.
I believe the obvious answer is Justin Bieber...and Lady Gaga. Or just trendy pop singers in general?

I am constantly seeing people I can't place into a gender. In fact, almost every time I see an Obama cabinet member, I see one.

I just filled out the application for CASPA, Centralized Application Service for Physician Assistants. This is a major-league application, and every future physician assistant will apply to it. Under sex, it offers "Gender Variant" as an option to male and female. Gender Deviant is probably a better choice.

Since some folks cannot except what they are , "other" may not be enough. Up is down , vulgar is beautiful , evil is good , for that matter good is evil. I've stated this before but it bares repeating " Delusionment may be concilatory , but in the end it will be very bitter ."
If you love someone , its best to tell them the truth . Imagine telling (lying ) someone that everything is okay , when in fact their soul is rotting. I woundn't call that love at all , as there is always hope . But to tell a lie , you first have to believe it.
