Houston we have contact

Contact? Bursts of mathematically patterned radio waves from deep space have scientists placing odds of “5 in 10,000” that they are not artificially produced by an intelligent species.

  • The signals show a pattern in multiples of 187.5
187.5?!? What possible significance could that have? Unless the aliens are all like Rainman, wouldn't you send out something pretty basic if you want to make contact? Like maybe, multiples of 11? Or 3? Or ditch multiples completely, and send bursts of pi out to hundred places or so?

  • You know somewhere out there, Some silly looking creature is watchmaking 1950's and 1960's TV shows from earth and wondering if Mrs Cleaver ever wore anything but a dress, and if those people on Gilligan's island are every gonna be rescued. If they judge us by that, we are going to be a lone for a long, long, long, time.. I bet laugh in just makes them go WTF?

    • I always wondered what Mrs. Cleaver would look like without that dress. Much better than Susan Sarandon, I'm guessing.

  • We really shouldn't make a big deal out of this. The signals are coming from so far away - possibly billions of light years, or if inside this galaxy, maybe several thousand light years (right next door by astronomical standards).

Obviously coming from a technologically advanced civilization that by now has destroyed itself with AGW (alien generated warming).

  • Over at the other end of the telescope the aliens are trying to figure out if the strange emissions in the audio frequencies emanating from the DC area form any sort of recognizable pattern.
