How government wrecked the gas can

How government wrecked the gas can. EPA regulations which sprouted out of California’s (where else?) demand to prevent spillage led to the modern gas can, a Rube Goldberg-like POS which makes it difficult to fill mowers, generators, etc, and retain one’s sanity. We personally find the new self-closing spouts aggravating and use saved spouts from old cans instead. We believe someday, old-fashioned useful gas cans will be passed from father to son like family heirlooms.

    • Blitz should have put a warning on the gas cans that says, "Warning. Do not put gasoline in this gas can. To be used for non-flamable unicorn piss only."

    • Blitz USA, which had about 70 percent of the gasoline can market, spent more than $30 million defending 42 product liability lawsuits after consumers were injured pouring gasoline out of the can onto an open fire, according to the company. That's forced the company to lay off virtually its entire workforce, a few will remain until all of the company's assets are sold off -- robbing them off their pay, their health care, and their stability.

POURING GASOLINE OUT OF THE CAN ONTO AN OPEN FIRE......And no one thought that anything could possibly go wrong with that?

Lawyers, the reason we need warnings on hair dryers warning you not to use them in the shower. I say, if they are stupid enough to pour gas on a fire, or use an electrical device in the shower, let 'em.

Maybe the stupid gene will be thinned out.

  • Here in New Mexico we can buy good gas cans, made out of plastic, self venting with a good spout. How many do you poor folks in la-la land want me to send ya? I'll make you a hell of a deal!

  • I just bought one of these cans in WA state for my weedeater. Filled it up and proceded to fill the tank on said implement and gas started pouring on my hands. What a piece of crap! It's all Walmart had. In Alaska we used Jerry Jugs, one of the best cans ever made.

  • "EPA regulations to prevent spillage" I spill more with these new gas cans than I ever did with the old ones, not to mention the struggle to pour because you have to use one hand to hold the safety mechanism open instead of being able to use both hands to steady the can.

    • You are absolutely right. They are impossible to use. The first time I used one of these POS and spilled gas all over my self and everything else, I took it back to the store and asked for the old kind. Not available. I asked who in the hell invented this unusable POS. The hardware guy says "The government." Say no more.
I tried to buy different nozzles for the damn thing. Not available. Now I am using a funnel and usually overfill the tank of whatever but spill way less than with that f*cking spout.
I am going to Canada in a few weeks and while there I am going to see if I can get a couple of gas cans that work. If so, maybe I'll get a bunch and resell them.

      • Simple solution.
Drill a 1/16" hole at the highest point away from the spout.
It will allow enough air in to control the pour.

        • Be sure to stick a toothpick in that little hole or gas can slosh out, stinking up your car after you fill it up.

  • I have 2 German gas cans. Living in CA I can assure you the cans they have are total pieces of crap.
