Bonfire of the Absurdities: After 35 year career writing software for IBM mainframes, am now self-employed contractor thinking of joining a union and striking for higher wages. Cured morbid fear of heights when I learned to look at them as lengths standing on end. Uncompromising in refusal to accept browser cookies. Amateur investor who has accumulated a small fortune in the market after starting out years ago with a large one. For recreation, I run, hike, kayak and play tennis but will not consider synchronized swimming under any circumstances.

    Poopajoe, that's not a scientific study. In fact, unless those conducting the "exposé" tracked the political affiliations of every passer-by (those who contributed and those who didn't), and checked to see if those who didn't contribute were donating to other charities, it revealed nothing about conservative vs. liberal donations.

    In fact, unless you know how much each donor actually gave (people have been known to drop in a few pennies, presumably to ease their conscience rather than to offer any real help), this "exposé" sounds pointless, except perhaps as fodder for political propaganda.

    Now, don't try to BS me any further. I've seen your own tirades about obese poor people allegedly abusing EBT cards at the grocery store, or trying to dun "free stuff" out of hardworking right wingers. Your own words show that you have very little compassion for the poor, the jobless and uninsured, and zero confidence that offering them unearned benefits will help them in any way.

    I'll believe you righties are charitable, the day I see you stop insulting the poor. But I don't expect to live long enough to see that.

          Some people lie about themselves and some don't, Rose. In my experience, it's right wingers who seem to have a greater need to parade their supposed superior virtue, and put down that of their political opponents. (Example: look a few posts above this one, to Robert's claim that I don't display any evidence of morality. Look at the discrepancy between what Newt Gingrich claims to value, and what he actually does.) ;)

          But you totally ignored my other points:
          (1) that those who boast about giving to the poor through private charity are very often the same ones who go around blaming the poor for their own problems, and insisting that unearned money and benefits will destroy their initiative. We see that all the time on these IHTM boards. Now, honestly, do you really think that someone who regularly insults the poor, the jobless and the uninsured is going to run right out and make big monetary donations to charities that give these people "free stuff"?

          (2) that much of what's deemed "charitable donations" doesn't go to the needy. Those megachurches springing up like dandelions all over the country, often boasting state-of-the-art auditoriums, reception rooms, recreational facilities and big, professionally landscaped lawns, owe their existence (and maintenance) to charitable donations. Conservative Christians (many of whom belong to churches that require tithing) might give 10% or more of their income to charity, without any of it being earmarked for genuinely charitable causes.

          Critical thinking 101: when what a person SAYS (e.g., "I give generously to the poor") doesn't jibe with what s/he DOES (e.g., insulting and slamming the poor for their own plight), believe what s/he DOES rather than what s/he CLAIMS to do.

          I'm willing to believe in the generosity of a political conservative if I see evidence of a generous spirit, as well as claims of monetary generosity. Quite simply, I don't see much evidence of the former on this board....especially toward selected populations of poor, uninsured and unemployed.

            I watched the video. If Johnson indeed believes that islands tip over and capsize, then he needs to take a basic course in earth science and/or geography.

  • I was born and raised in SE Alaska on an island (not the "BIG" island of "ALASKA") in a town called Ketchikan. It really amazes me to see the brain numbed idiots that are coming out of our education system. They have all the new technology in the world but are dumb as rocks. I've never left a post here before but have been reading this site for about 8 mos. now and am hooked on it. Great job by Editor, Administrator, contributors, and all of the 'regulars' except Oblivia, Everhard,et al.

Came home and checked it out for a few days and I was hooked. Good conservative folks who respect the Constitution. I prefer to practice the 2nd Ammendment on a regular basis, so I'll be at the range tomorrow honing a few skills.

They will grow up knowing how to think for themselves, they will understand the need for fiscal conservatism with their personal finances, they will be man, or woman, enough to stand up and take personal responsibility for their actions, they will graduate knowing how to read and write.

            Sorry, but my kids know better than that. They know, for example, that hard work doesn't always guarantee a reward, either instant or delayed....and that, sometimes, those who seem blessed with the most rewards are NOT those who have worked hard for them.

            They know, too, that not one of us got where we are today without ANY outside help....and they're humble enough to realize that not everyone has had the advantages they did.

            What's more, they know better than to make snap moral judgments about people who receive government benefits....or to let TV and talk radio pundits put such ideas into their heads.
