The Red Cross is a subsidiary of the Klintoon Foundation.
I keep my donations on the local level by choosing small facilities with minimal national recognition. I feel that most, if not all of my donation gets to stay at the facility of my choosing.
Keep in mind that the big charities do a lot of good and do help a lot of people. The problem is their own bureaucracy has grown so large that generally less than half of the money goes to help those in need. One hand doesn't know what the other is doing and areas that are hard hit with a natural disaster are prime grounds for scam artists and thieves. There's no accountability for where the money goes.
But they were really nice homes...

Me too. After 9/11 when the red cross fleeced the giving American public. IIRC the CEO of red cross knocks down $500,000/yr.
