How to celebrate Juneteenth

• I guess it would be politically incorrect to point out that people in Oakland, Chicago, and Michigan have no rational reason for celebrating Juneteenth Day. It belongs to Galveston, Texas, and no other place, certainly not places that never ever had slavery.

    • Why wait until the day before the observance? Why didn’t they pass it during Black History Month? You know the chaos this caused on bases?

      • You mean it started this year? I assumed it was going to start next year.

        • Oh no. It started THE NEXT DAY! 1800 the night before the base declared holiday hours for the base gates the next day. No alert went out. It was chaos. Some military showed up to work, not having heard.

        • Ever notice how Democrats are incompetent, to the point of being horrible, at actually governing? Even when they are doing something they themselves wanted to do, they screw it up every damn time.

    • Now I have to spend the rest of my life explaining to ignorant twits that no, June 19, 1865, is not the date when slavery ended.

      September 22, 1862: Date Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, which also did not end slavery.

      January 31, 1865: Date that the Thirteenth Amendment was passed by Congress, actually ending slavery four months and nineteen days before the slaves of Galveston finally heard about it.

      • All that being said, I'd rather have a new summer holiday than one in September or January. So I sort of like the new holiday.
