Bonfire of the Absurdities: After 35 year career writing software for IBM mainframes, am now self-employed contractor thinking of joining a union and striking for higher wages. Cured morbid fear of heights when I learned to look at them as lengths standing on end. Uncompromising in refusal to accept browser cookies. Amateur investor who has accumulated a small fortune in the market after starting out years ago with a large one. For recreation, I run, hike, kayak and play tennis but will not consider synchronized swimming under any circumstances.

  • I run a small construction company in Kali that, unfortunately, needs to rely on immigrant labor (all are verified to the best of my ability). In compliance with the law, I provide insurance to my employees. During good times I paid for about 80% of the cost. It wasn't long after the program was put in place that one of the mexicans came to me with the statement that he can get twice the coverage (a blue cross policy with full coverage) for his whole family from the welfare office and with that they told him to apply for the food stamp program. I was truly dumbfounded. I looked into it and found all his claims were, in fact, true, even though he was working and most of his family was here illegally. He then, per the law opted out of my insurance program, essentially giving himself a $400.00 a month raise. Now the cost of insuring him and his family with the policy the welfare office provided him would have cost my company about $1200.00 per month, now, the taxpayer picks that up, a concept my employee could not fathom, he claimed it was the government who paid the bill not the people. Further, he DID receive the food stamps that, according to him, he told the caseworker he did not want. Very shortly after that most of the mexicans on my payroll opted out of my insurance program for the welfare office and food stamps. I am no longer surprised at anything this idiotic government does. I am just sad that it has brought this country to it's knees and our ultimate demise is right around the corner.
    It still amazes me that we still blame the "Greedy Contractor". Most contractors I know are a very beaten down lot, beaten down by their own government and all it's restrictions and ridiculous policies, that's a whole 'nuther story...

    • No, there's no such thing as "long term" welfare, or a society within our society that loves it's freebies. It's all in our imagination. They're not proud of who they are, and they're all working hard to get off the government dole. Right, My Dear Sweet Olivia?

  • It took 10 years for someone in Californiay to figure out that a pair of doctors or whatever were living big and using welfare as well. I am not surprised.
