Iowa grants permits for blind residents to carry guns in public

• I am all for gun rights, but really? Though JP is right. There is a big difference between legally blind and actually blind.

  • Being legally blind and/or actually blind doesn't mean that your other four senses can't compensate for your lack of sight. Some blind people have such acute hearing and senses of touch, smell and taste that the can literally 'see' with their other senses. At one time, my own hearing was good enough to 'virtually' see the environment around me and I needed it to, for my very survival. Those days are behind me, but I can still remember being able to almost see what I was hearing or listening to...kinda spooky. I don't see a problem giving non-sighted people, given the proper training, self defense gun liscenses. Hell, they're probably better equipped to recognize a threat to their lives than we are.

• Blind doesn't mean you can't see. Blind means you can't see well enough to drive a car and can't see well enough to do a bunch of other things easily but you can still stick the muzzle of a gun in an attacker's belly and pull the trigger. There are millions of people at various stages of macular degeneration who will always have some residual peripheral vision and it's amazing how effective they can be with that residual vision.

• I know some sighted folks I would not trust with a fishing pole, and some legally blind folks I would trust with a firearm.
