Jeremy Lin ESPN racial slur blasted by Congressperson Judy Chu. Yeah we think it is disgusting too. But perhaps the honorable congressperson should be more concerned with halting this countries slide into despotism and economic meltdown than she is with some idiot without sense enough to engage in polite headline writing.

Is it just me, or are there more important things to worry about?
I can think of a couple. To me, anything that happens on ESPN is a non-event, and is to be completely disregarded.
My late friend, Marco Castillo, had a way with words. Chinkers and Beaners was his favorite restaurant. This Mexican friend of his ran it with his Thai wife. Mixed menu. It was delicious. I went there several times, always after closing the bar I worked at, so I was usually quite gassed. I am unsure if that was the actual name of the place, but Marco and the owners tossed the epithets around with no regard so it didn't matter to me. He wound up murdered at Cielito Lindo's night club on the night of the grand opening along with one of his pals I only new as Scooby, probably based on his last name being Escobar. Marco was a dangerous fellow, definitely a better ally than adversary.

Seriously?!? If this is what we, as a people, have come to then I believe that we are beyond saving. "Chink in the armor" has been a saying that implies a weakness in ones defenses for for at least 1500 yrs. I read the article and....HOLY S**T!!! there aren't even any legal words that I can use to describe the disgust I'm feeling right now!!!
Pink, None of what you said means a damn thing. The PC nazis are hell bent on destroying anything they can, & that reminds me of something I heard on Quinn & Rose on XM. Quinn pointed out that conservatives spend their lives building things up & trying to advance, Liberals & progressives spend their lives tearing down what others are trying to build. I believe he's correct.
I do too. Good observation. I would only add that progressives tear down with the intent to redistribute the spoils. Randian philosophy.
Well, I admit I can be pretty coarse and crass about some things, but it seems to me that if this was not intentional as an extremely tasteless play on words, then it was monumentally stupid. In other words, if you didn't know what you were doing, you should have, and either way, you deserve an asswhuppin.
Come on now, let's be fair with ourselves, over the last few weeks, haven't we been "tsk tsk"ing about the fast-food drones who have put unflattering comments on receipts - what was one, "lady chinky eyes" or something?
For what it may be worth, in my experience, "chink" is meant specifically as a Chinese, NOT generically "Asian," so that the responsible writer who is allegedly married to an "Asian" lady means little. That's like excusing use of the word "wop" because the offender is married to a "European" lady.
And speaking of coarse and crass, next time we get together for drinks, I'll tell y'all the story of the Chinese tourist and the black bartender.

The guy who wrote it is married to an oriental. Sounds like it was an honest but stupid mistake and thanks to everyone being PC he lost his job.

Agreed... I admire Lin as much as anyone, but this firing over innocuous phrase is beyond ridiculous. And I was calling him Shao-lin out of complete respect
This phrase probably dates back to the Middle Ages or something. There are shitloads of people alive today who probably don't know what "armor" is, let alone that "chink" was once used as a slur against Orientals - one that I have not heard used as such in YEARS although I have heard the idiom "chink in the armor" as a way of indicating a weak spot in an otherwise strong structure. I would suggest the ESPN should've used "Achilles heel" instead but that would surely have drawn the ire of Greek-Americans and/or podiatrists.
Sorry BOA, gonna hafta fuss at you for a minute. "Oriental" describes objects like rugs and vases. PEOPLE from Asian countries are called "Asians" not "Orientals". Pet peeve of mine. OK, getting down off my soap box now.

Oh and as to the Occidental current researching of my family tree suggests that there may be some Korean blood flowing through my veins...still working on confirmation on that one. (That may be why I don't look like any of my cousins ;))
Full disclosure: I use the term "Asian" but Oriental as in Easterner does not trouble me. I live in a Spanish style house yet I refer to people of Castillian ancestry as Spanish anyway. I'm really just playing devil's advocate because the Lin story here is absurd.

LOL by the time you said Achilles heel I said " ... but the Greeks will..." and then I read the end of your sentence. LOL. You are right, but I got to be real when I read chink in the armor I thought weak spot and whatever... I really didn't even think about chink = asian... It is so weird! If NO ONE had mentioned it, I would have never even thought about it. There is always a fool out there.
When I read the story a few days ago, I though this was a complete waste of time. Unless the person that wrote it confessed that is what they were doing, or the person had a history of these types of racial things OR an idiot pointed out the possibility of a racial slur, I would never in a million years would have thought that statement had a racial bias to it. Jeremy Lin handled it well, I also do not believe that this was the intention, however if it was we cannot know for sure because it is a common term.
Here is the odd thing about this story, Max Bretos was suspended for 30 days by ESPN for reading the offensive line...

...BTW, I remember watching Max Bretos for several years on the Fox Soccer Channel, & "chink in the armor" was something I heard him say all the time. I get why this looks bad, but it seems to have blown up way out of proportion as well. I like Max & I have never seen any racial conponent to his presentation. He is a soccer expert, it's the most diverse sport on the planet, & there really is no room for bigots in soccer. He's married to an asian woman, & I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop in this story.
