Another honor for the Worst President of the Twentieth Century. People like every former President except Carter more than they did four years ago. Once again, Jimmy stands alone.

Of the nine U.S. presidents who have served in the past 50 years, John F. Kennedy continues to earn the highest retrospective job approval rating from Americans, now 85%. Ronald Reagan ranks second, with 74%. While these presidents’ ratings are largely unchanged from 2006, Bill Clinton’s rating has improved, putting him in third place, while Jimmy Carter, at 52%, has dropped from third to sixth. Richard Nixon remains the lowest rated.
For god’s sake, Jimmy, even Richard Nixon is more popular than he was four years ago. For your own good, please go away. Stop the endless legacy rehabilitation tour. It’s not working. The more people see you, the less they like you.
Hmmmm. Another one of those remarkable similarities to President Obama. This is starting to sound like that old “Kennedy had a secretary named Lincoln and Lincoln had a secretary named Kennedy” meme.

I was channel surfing & noticed MessNBC Morning Joe, Mika puts this poll up & purposely has Ronald Reagan deleted from #2 spot, so it reads JFK #1, Bubba Clinton # 3. Willie Geist had to remind her of that & his score. She leaves poll up, offers no apologies & proceeds to praise Jimmy Carter score. Jimmy Carter--the only one whose score declined.

the only reason i can think of why clinton's popularity went up is because george bush was so unpopular and obama appears to be struggling. plus, clinton was president during a time of great prosperity and peace, i think we all miss that time. however if we really examine his policies... he made a lot of mistakes, especially NAFTA.
NAFTA was just a means to an end. With a less stupid government, NAFTA would have been a net gain for us. All 50 US States gained from free trade amongst themselves, which is why various governments want to get together and get them some synergy, from stuff like the EU.
However, as it was handled, it did become a job exporter and a wholesale handover of our manufacturing base to China.
Not to mention the shipments of Crays and other enabling technology, giving the Chinese the tools they needed to kill us that they couldn't get any other way, and all for what good to the U.S.?

As long as a politician is safely out of the way, their popularity rises. Thus we have libs praising Reagan, and socialists digging up Lincoln and using him as a role model. Being dead, Zombie Lincoln doesn't have much to say on the subject.
(There actually is something to the socialist's argument -- Lincoln was a corporate welfare advocate that really cut back a lot of freedoms, ignored the 10th Amendment, drew us into an unnecessary war (Slavery was ended peacefully in most of the rest of the world in that era, although it still persists in Arab Muslim states unabated) and grew the Federal Government dramatically. He's really not my favorite president. But he's dead, so I like him well enough. Q.E.D.)
An ex-President has really only one role -- Elder Statesman. That involves giving speeches, and looking Ex-Presidential. Carter still thinks he can contribute, and that puts people off. I fully expect that people will eventually like Carter more. He just has to 'pop his clogs', as the Brits say.
i agree pericat. well said. besides, the abolition of slavery was more economic than human rights, although it is sold as a human rights issue to make americans feel good about their history...
Unnecessary...? without it it is possible slavery would have persisted for another set of decades while the rest of the world except for certain african and arab (and asian) countries as you mentioned were moving forward against it. It would have probably made US a backwards and reviled nation and any semblance of a nation of the free and home of the brave would seem quite hypocritical. Also there were others involved with the civil war that bare the brunt of the reason it started and also the war was more than just about slavery it was in the end about keeping the union together and had he not acted we would not be USA. Except for California and some other heavily liberal states (I am looking at you MA) I actually like the country as it is pretty much.
Well Clinton going up I still don't know why other than perhaps people are wanting for him to come back because as donavan mentioned his time even though far from perfect has been considered pretty stable. However he didnt have to deal with 9/11 so I find it a bit interesting that people are not putting that into perspective... if Clinton had to deal with 9/11 things would have not been so stable and "great" as it was (seemingly) back then.
Most information regarding President Lincoln avoids the fact that his preference was returning the slaves whence they came, but realized logistical impracticality, in fact the impossibility of doing so. He was a sly one, most people don't figure that when talking Honest Abe.
Actually, he tried that. The black leaders who he met with were apparently not won over by his overtures for them to emigrate to a place that featured a near 90% mortality rate.

Abe was a complicated guy, and just one book can't capture everything, bad and good about him. Can't argue with Lincoln's end result -- but the path he took his country to get there was not the best of choices, and undue reverence for him sets people up for disappointment. His consolidation of the country was what really began the Federal Corporate/Individual Welfare engine.
Hindsight is 20/20. He was indeed imperfect and complicated and he may have an abuse problem of a medication that really wasn't. I am not saying we need to deify Abe or anything like that either. However the fact remains that it is what it is and it happened that way because it had to. Since we are not him, we don't know what was going through his mind all the time and therefore if he thought of other alternatives that would have satisfied the future generations we don't know. Perhaps there was such a way, perhaps there wasn't. Perhaps he thought of it, perhaps not. He chose that path and it ended up working itself out although of course unfortunately causing human lives.
WWI and II also cost a great deal of human lives, and those could also be considered unnecessary wars as well, but they happened.... all in all FDR didn't even need to get us into that war either even after PH. If he hadn't perhaps we wouldn't have lost so many lives in Europe and Asia, but if we hadn't possibly Hitler would have destroyed Europe and we would have been next and who knows we would be speaking Japanese and German right now...
What am I saying... I am saying that it is hard to lead. I don't agree with everything done by any President in any point in time. Some Presidents were just evil and some were just clueless, however human history is that history and people had to make choices. it worked out in some cases and in some cases it didn't. Tough decisions have to be made and people who have the luxury of time and calmness can make all kinds of theories about it, but in the end what is done is done. Like Bush the war in Iraq was unnecessary or so it seems, but in the end I know for a fact that many people (Iraqis) love the fact that Saddam is dead. The little girl that can go to school and not be worried that she will be stopped by a random man or by one of Saddam's sons and be raped I am sure is thankful that an unnecessary war came to be. Of course Iraq and the whole world is still not perfect, but I got to recognize that it is a tough job being a leader and having people double guessing decisions made, especially when those decisions had perhaps unintentional yet positive outcomes.

As long as we are mentioning random bits of information in hopes of implying causality amongst the gullible, I think that Carter's decline in popularity coincides with Pluto being undefined as a planet.
Of course, there are some who may say that Carter's decline is related to the unexpected Democrat wins in the House, precipitating Nancy's tenure as speaker. The single thing that harmed overall Democratic Party fortunes the most, apparently, was getting elected.
But if you want Occam's Razor, it'd have to be that we see & hear a lot more of him lately. The poor sod has a knack for getting on the wrong side of issues and opening his mouth one time too many. I *can* empathize with the 'saying one thing too many bit'.
